Masyn Winn was dreadful during a cup of coffee with the big club down the stretch of the 2023 season, but that didn't stop the Cardinals from handing him their starting shortstop gig heading into 2024. The youngster rewarded the club's faith with a quality rookie season, as Winn collected a .730 OPS with 15 home runs and 11 stolen bases while playing 150 games. Ten of Winn's 15 long balls came after the All-Star break after the infielder tweaked his approach to eke out more power, but it came at the expense of 37 points of batting average. Winn was the Cardinals' leadoff hitter from June on, which helped boost his counting stats, but with just a .290 OBP from the leadoff spot, he's no guarantee to stay there, especially not versus righties. The shortstop had an .818 OPS against left-handers in 2024 but just a .691 OPS versus right-handed pitching.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Still batting ninth against lefty

Winn is hitting ninth again for the Cardinals on Monday versus Angels left-hander Tyler Anderson. Winn was in the nine spot for all three games against the Twins' righties in the opening series, and he will remain there Monday even as the Halos send a southpaw to the hill. The shortstop was just 4-for-50 at the plate during spring training and is still looking for his first hit of the regular season. The left-handed hitting Lars Nootbaar is again occupying the leadoff spot Monday.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Slated to bat ninth Opening Day

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Monday that he is planning to bat Winn ninth Opening Day versus Twins right-hander Pablo Lopez, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Winn didn't hit anywhere other than leadoff during Grapefruit League games, but he is in the No. 9 spot for Monday's exhibition contest versus Triple-A Memphis in what Marmol indicated is a preview of his Opening Day lineup. The young shortstop went just 4-for-50 in Grapefruit League play and will begin the season at the bottom of the batting order, at least against righties. Winn could move back to the top of the lineup versus lefties. Lars Nootbaar is in the leadoff spot for Monday's exhibition.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Aiming to return Friday

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Wednesday that Winn (wrist) will get several at-bats in live batting practice Wednesday and will aim to return to the Grapefruit League lineup Friday, John Denton of MLB.com reports. Winn had to be scratched from the St. Louis lineup Tuesday due to right wrist soreness, but the move was considered precautionary and it sounds like he should be back in game action soon. The young shortstop has struggled at the plate this spring, going 4-for-41 with a 12:3 K:BB.

Winn was scratched from Tuesday's Grapefruit League lineup against the Marlins due to soreness in his right wrist, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The Cardinals are saying the move is precautionary, so it seems for now that Winn is merely day-to-day. Jose Barrero has entered the lineup in Winn's place.

He has batted leadoff in every one of his starts this spring and appears poised to hit at the top of the order for the Cardinals on Opening Day.

  • Cardinals' Masyn Winn: Managing back issue

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that Winn is absent from Wednesday's lineup in Houston due to a lingering back issue, Bally Sports Midwest reports. Winn has required some extra days off this season because of a back problem that dates back to spring training. He had to be checked on by the trainer during Monday's game versus the Astros when the injury flared up during an at-bat, but Winn remained in that contest and also played Tuesday, going 3-for-3 with a home run, a walk and a stolen base. While the injury does not seem to be affecting Winn's performance, the club wants to be proactive with rest. Brandon Crawford is occupying shortstop Wednesday.
