  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Homers in two straight

Gonzales went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Saturday against the Yankees. Gonzales took Luis Gil yard to record a home run in his second consecutive game, his only two long balls since returning from the injured list Aug. 26. He's still had an impressive close to the regular season, maintaining a .308 batting average with 10 RBI and 13 runs scored to go along with a 14.8 percent strikeout rate in his last 28 appearances. While not a prolific power hitter, Gonzales should be locked into a starting role for the Pirates in 2025.

He snapped out of that slump with his second three-hit performance of the season. Despite the recent downturn, Gonzales has enjoyed his most sustained success in the majors, maintaining a .282 average and .755 OPS across 161 plate appearances.

Gonzales is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs. Following his call-up from Triple-A Indianapolis, Gonzales had started at second base in the first two games of the series and went 1-for-7 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored. He'll give way to Alika Williams on Sunday, and the two could end up operating in a timeshare at the keystone until Ke'Bryan Hayes (back) returns from the injured list. Jared Triolo has acted as the Pirates' primary second baseman this season, but he'll see the majority of the starts at the hot corner while Hayes is on the mend.

  • Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Cutting down on strikeout rate

Gonzales has a 17.4 percent strikeout rate across 132 plate appearances with Triple-A Indianapolis. Gonzales struck out at around a 28 percent clip for most of his stops in the minor leagues, so his current rate stands out positively. He's also posted a .254 ISO and 167 wRC+, albeit in his age-25 season. The Pirates have struggled to score runs consistently in the first full month of the new campaign, and Jared Triolo has only a .043 ISO and 67 wRC+ as the team's current regular second baseman. If Gonzales keeps hitting well, he could get a second shot at the majors in short order.
