Jason Foley's secondary offerings have been a work in progress, but he finally achieved success with his slider in 2024. The right-hander held opposing hitters to a mere .113 average and .145 slugging percentage that were among the best marks in the league for that pitch type. As expected, his usage of the slider increased by 14.1 percentage points - to 31.5 percent overall. Foley still favored his 97 mph sinker (54.7 percent usage), but it was crushed by opposing hitters (.299 AVG, 48.6 percent hard-hit). The 29-year-old still led Detroit with a career-high 28 saves and a 62.2% team save share, but he lost his grasp on closing duties for an extended period near mid-season and during the playoffs. Oddly, Foley only pitched once out of seven postseason contests, casting some doubt on his prospects for opening 2025 as the Tigers' closer. A shared role and more conservative save projection - perhaps 15-to-20 for Foley - might be a more realistic outcome.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Sent to minors

The Tigers optioned Foley to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Foley allowed five runs over 7.1 innings during Grapefruit League play but also had a 10:0 K:BB. The 29-year-old led the Tigers with 28 saves last season and had seemed to be firmly in the picture to close heading into 2025, but Detroit will give him time in the minors first to sharpen up. Beau Brieske, Tyler Holton, Tommy Kahnle and Will Vest are among the candidates to see save chances for the Tigers in what looks like a murky situation for fantasy.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Struggling this spring

Through five Grapefruit League appearances, Foley has allowed five runs on eight hits across 4.1 innings. Foley was solid for the Tigers in 2024, posting a 3.15 ERA and 1.18 WHIP during the regular season and leading the team with 28 saves, so the righty should have a little leeway despite his spring struggles. He still looks like the top candidate for saves in Detroit to start the year, though newcomer Tommy Kahnle is expected to be in the mix along with holdover Tyler Holton, and possibly Will Vest and Beau Brieske as well. Foley will likely need a strong start to his season to solidify his grip on the closer role.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Inks deal with Detroit

Foley agreed to a one-year, $3.15 million contract with the Tigers on Thursday, avoiding arbitration, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. The right-hander receives a significant raise in his first season of arbitration eligibility after recording 28 saves with a 3.15 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 46:20 K:BB across 60 innings during the regular season last year. Foley is the early favorite to close games in 2025, but he's not guaranteed the full-time job due to his shaky control and could end up in a high-leverage committee.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Secures one-out save Friday

Foley recorded the last out of Friday's 4-1 win over the White Sox to earn the save, Tyler Holton was pitching well and possibly could have been asked to retire one more batter with a three-run lead, but the Tigers didn't mess around with a chance to secure an AL Wild Card spot. Foley did his part to kick-start the celebration by securing his 28th save of the season and seventh in the last two weeks. The righty has been a big piece of his team's surprise success this year, pitching to a 3.15 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 60 innings. Foley will clearly have a high-leverage role in the postseason now as well.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Up to 27 saves

Foley earned the save in Thursday's 4-3 win over Tampa Bay, striking out a pair in a scoreless ninth inning. Foley's now converted 12 of his last 13 save opportunities, allowing just four earned runs over 16.2 innings in that span. The right-hander is up to 27 saves on the season with a 3.17 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 46:20 K:BB across 59.2 innings.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Earns 24th save

Foley earned the save against the Royals on Monday, striking out one over a perfect ninth inning. Foley was called upon to protect a 7-6 lead in the ninth frame and did so on 13 pitches. The 28-year-old has converted nine straight saves, including five in nine September appearances. On the season, he is 24-for-27 in save opportunities with a 3.02 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 43:19 K:BB across 56.2 innings.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Locks down 23rd save

Foley earned the save Sunday, striking out two over 1.1 perfect innings against the Orioles. Foley was called upon to finish out the eighth inning after an Adley Rutschman homer brought the Orioles to within one. He struck out Coby Mayo, then retired the side in the ninth to finish off his 23rd save of the season. It was a nice rebound effort for Foley, who had allowed two runs in his last appearance, the first time he had allowed an earned run since the end of July.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Takes loss Thursday

Foley (3-6) allowed two runs on two hits across an inning of work to take the loss Thursday against the Rockies. A day after recording his 22nd save of the season, Foley was less effective in a non-save situation Thursday. The righty entered in a 2-2 game and allowed his first earned runs in an appearance since July 30. Foley's recent success and his 3.15 ERA overall should keep him locked in as Detroit's primary closer, though lefty Tyler Holton has also been good, and the latter should continue to see some save opportunities in the right matchups.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Earns save Friday

Foley threw a perfect inning to pick up a save against the White Sox on Friday. Foley needed only four pitches to close out the 5-2 win. It was his first save since Aug. 15 and just his fourth since the start of July. Foley has turned in 8.2 straight frames without allowing an earned run, dropping his ERA on the year to 3.33 with a 33:16 K:BB through 46 innings.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Picks up 16th save

Foley earned the save in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Mariners, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning. It's the first save for Foley in over a month and his first opportunity since July 12, when he allowed a run in a loss to the Dodgers. While Foley struggled to close out July, he's been pitching better since the start of August -- he's now made seven straight appearances (6.2 innings) without allowing an earned run. While the closing job in Detroit appears fluid, Foley is still likely the best bet for saves moving forward. He's converted 16 of 19 save chances this year while posting a 3.48 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP and 32:15 K:BB across 44 innings.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Earns 15th save

Foley earned a save in Wednesday's win over the Guardians, walking one and recording the final two outs in the ninth inning. Foley was summoned to protect a 5-4 lead with one out in the ninth inning and stranded a runner on third to secure his 15th save in 17 attempts. It was a gutsy effort, as he entered Wednesday having yielded four earned runs over his previous four appearances. On the season, the 28-year-old owns a 3.41 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 24:10 K:BB over 31.2 innings.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Shaky but records save

Foley allowed two runs on four hits but managed to secure the save in Friday's 5-4 win over the Reds. Foley started the ninth inning with a 5-2 lead but was generally ineffective as he allowed Cincinnati back into the game before eventually escaping. Despite the blip, the righty has been mostly reliable this year, compiling a 3.26 ERA across 30.1 innings and recording 14 saves in 16 chances. Foley isn't the most exciting option, but as long as he remains the closer in Detroit, he'll maintain fantasy value.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Earns 13th save

Foley struck out one over 1.1 innings to earn the save in a 2-1 win over the White Sox on Friday. Foley was summoned to protect a 2-1 lead with two outs in the eighth inning and induced a groundout from Andrew Vaughn. He hit Paul DeJong with a pitch in the ninth but ended the game with a double play to earn his 13th save of the season. Foley has not allowed an earned run in seven June appearances and is now 13-for-15 in save chances with a 2.67 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 22:9 K:BB over 27 innings in 2024.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Blows save, takes first loss Friday

Foley (2-1) allowed two runs on four hits without recording an out to blow the save and take the loss Friday against the Yankees. Foley came on in the ninth inning to protect a 1-0 Detroit lead, but the righty struggled and blew his first save of the season in 10 chances. He's still sitting with a solid 2.63 ERA overall and should remain the team's closer for now, though it's a fluid situation with Alex Lange, Shelby Miller and Andrew Chafin all potentially waiting in the wings if Foley stumbles again. Lange led the Tigers with 26 saves last year and has been sharp with a 0.75 ERA in 2024, so he may be the next man up in this bullpen.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Earns league-leading ninth save

Foley allowed one hit and one walk over one scoreless frame to earn the save Sunday against the Royals. He struck out two. Foley kept things interesting by allowing the first two batters he faced to reach but induced a groundout followed by two strikeouts to join four other relievers with his league-leading ninth save in as many opportunities. The Tigers' closer lowered his ERA to 1.38 with a 1.23 WHIP and 13 strikeouts across 13 innings.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Picks up fifth save

Foley earned his fifth save of the season Tuesday against the Rangers after he allowed a hit and a walk over a scoreless two-thirds of an inning. Foley entered with a 4-2 advantage and needed just the final two outs, though he made things interesting by giving up a single and a walk to the first two batters he faced. The right-hander battled back quickly and retired the next two hitters on three pitches, and he's now a perfect 5-for-5 in save chances. Foley has surrendered just one unearned run through nine outings this season, and he appears to have a decent hold on the closer role as the only Detroit reliever with multiple saves.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Picks up win

Foley (1-0) allowed one hit in a scoreless inning Monday, striking out two and earning a win over the Mets. The Tigers won in the 10th inning after Foley quickly worked through the ninth. The 28-year-old has already converted two saves and earned a win this season as he's seemingly locked himself into Detroit's ninth-inning role. Foley has four punchouts through 2.1 innings so far.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Earns second save

Foley was perfect in two-thirds of an inning Sunday against the White Sox to earn his second save of the season. Foley appears to have won the closer role in Detroit, closing out his second game of the series sweep over the White Sox. While presumed closer Alex Lange struggled with his command in his first appearance Saturday, allowing three walks while earning one out, Foley has retired all four batters he's faced to seemingly solidify his hold on the job.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Held out Sunday

Manager A.J. Hinch said that Foley (undisclosed) wasn't used in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets due to "mid-camp fatigue," Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Foley doesn't look to be dealing with a legitimate injury, but he could be dealing with a case of "dead arm" after allowing three runs on three hits and two walks over 2.2 innings in three appearances so far this spring. He presumably isn't in any real danger of opening the season on the injured list but may rest for a few days before making his next Grapefruit League appearance.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Records another save Saturday

Foley pitched a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts to record the save in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Guardians. Foley now has seven saves this season, with three of them coming in his last four appearances as he's taken over as Detroit's primary closer, displacing Alex Lange. Foley has a strong 2.63 ERA overall, though his ERA in August sits at 4.32, in part due to allowing three earned runs in an outing Wednesday. As long as the righty displays better command than Lange and avoids blowups, he should stick as the team's top option for saves.
