  • Chris Stewart: Opts out of contract

Stewart opted out of his contract with the Padres on Saturday, Robert Murray of The Athletic reports. The 37-year-old had played 19 games for Triple-A El Paso, hitting .277/.333/.354. Stewart has appeared in at least one big-league game in 12 of the last 13 seasons but might be at the end of the road at this point, as he hasn't hit above .214 in the majors since 2015.

  • Padres' Chris Stewart: Invited to Padres' camp

Stewart signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Thursday which includes an invitation to spring training. Stewart split time between Atlanta and Arizona in 2018, appearing in just eight big-league games between both stops. With Austin Hedges and Francisco Mejia both ahead of Stewart on the organizational depth chart, the veteran backstop doesn't figure to spend much (if any) time in the majors in 2019.

  • Diamondbacks' Chris Stewart: Summoned to majors

The Diamondbacks purchased Stewart's contract from Triple-A Reno on Saturday. The veteran was acquired Thursday from the Braves and finds himself on the major-league roster two days later. However, Stewart will struggle to find much playing time, now serving as the club's No. 4 catcher in an already busy time share between the top three options.

  • Diamondbacks' Chris Stewart: Sent to Diamondbacks

Stewart was traded from the Braves to the Diamondbacks on Thursday, Robert Murray of The Athletic Wisconsin reports. Stewart appeared in just five games for the Braves before being traded, struggling to an unsightly .214/.250/.214 slash line. He put together a similarly poor line with Triple-A Gwinnett, slashing .219/.299/.277 across 47 games. The veteran backstop should serve as organizational catching depth for Arizona.

  • Braves' Chris Stewart: Outrighted to Triple-A

The Braves outrighted Stewart to Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday. Stewart lost his spot on the Braves' active and 40-man rosters after Kurt Suzuki overcame a short-term absence due to a triceps injury. Atlanta later brought in Rene Rivera on a waiver claim to serve as the organization's No. 3 catching option.

  • Braves' Chris Stewart: Contract purchased from minors

Stewart had his contract selected from Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. Stewart will serve as the club's backup catcher behind Tyler Flowers since Kurt Suzuki is dealing with an elbow contusion. In a corresponding move, Michael Reed was sent down to Gwinnett.

  • Braves' Chris Stewart: Could break camp with Braves

Stewart is still in the running for the final spot on the Braves' Opening Day roster, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. With Johan Camargo (back) headed for the DL, the Braves are deciding between an additional utility player like Danny Santana, or a third catcher in Stewart, which would allow the team to use Tyler Flowers and Kurt Suzuki as late-game pinch hitters. For his part, Stewart has had a decent spring in his limited opportunities, going 4-for-12, but the 36-year-old is highly unlikely to see enough playing time to have any real fantasy value even if he does win the job.

  • Pirates' Chris Stewart: Out of Sunday lineup

Stewart is out of the lineup Sunday against the Reds, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. While Francisco Cervelli (quadriceps) is on the DL, Stewart has drawn four of the last five starts behind the plate for Pittsburgh. Sunday will mark Stewart's second consecutive day out of the lineup, however, as the team will turn to Elias Diaz as it attempts to take the series from Cincinnati.

  • Pirates' Chris Stewart: Gives way to Diaz on Sunday

Stewart is out of the lineup Sunday against the Reds. With Francisco Cervelli (quadriceps) returning to the disabled list Saturday, the Pirates have an opening for regular starts behind the plate, but it looks as though Stewart may be forced to share time with Elias Diaz, who receives the nod Sunday. Even if Stewart were to take on the bulk of the catching duties, he would likely do more harm than good for fantasy owners, given the middling .469 OPS he carries for the season.

  • Pirates' Chris Stewart: Bows out of lineup

Stewart is out of the lineup Monday against the Phillies. After starting four of the past six games behind the plate, Stewart's opportunities to see regular at-bats will likely draw to a close with the Pirates bringing back Francisco Cervelli (concussion) from the 7-day disabled list Monday. Stewart has never been known for his aptitude with the bat anyway, so it's unlikely that fantasy owners in NL-only leagues were relying on him for much production while Cervelli was sidelined.

  • Pirates' Chris Stewart: Collects fourth start in six games

Stewart will start behind the plate and bat eighth Sunday against the Giants, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. It initially appeared that the higher-upside Elias Diaz would settle in as the Pirates' primary starter behind the dish while Francisco Cervelli (concussion) has been sidelined, but those duties seem to have fallen to Stewart, who will pick up his fourth start in six games Sunday. Stewart collected only two hits in those previous three starts and is batting .203 on the season, so it will be difficult to wring much fantasy value out of him while he retains the top spot on the depth chart.

  • Pirates' Chris Stewart: In lineup Wednesday against Brewers

Stewart is in the lineup for Wednesday's game, Stephen J. Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. After spending three weeks on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring, Stewart will be making his first start since late May when the Pirates face off with Milwaukee on Wednesday. The catcher will bat eighth in his return.

  • Pirates' Chris Stewart: Activated from DL

Stewart (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day disabled list Sunday, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. Stewart had been sidelined since May 30 with a strained left hamstring but was recently able to aggressively run the bases, which was his final hurdle before returning to live action. He'll slot back in as the reserve catcher behind Francisco Cervelli.

  • Pirates' Chris Stewart: Hopes to run bases soon

Stewart (hamstring) ran curves Wednesday and hopes to progress to running the bases in the near future, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Stewart is slowly making his way back from a hamstring strain that has kept him sidelined since May. Once Stewart is able to run the bases, he'll likely head out on a rehab assignment, at which point there should be a clearer return date for him.

  • Pirates' Chris Stewart: MRI on tap Wednesday

Stewart (hamstring) will undergo an MRI on Wednesday, Stephen J. Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. While the injury originally wasn't thought to be anything overly serious, Stewart tried testing it out prior to Tuesday's contest and did not respond well, prompting a trip to the DL. A possible timetable for his return should become clearer following Wednesday's tests. In the meantime, Elias Diaz will serve as the Pirates' backup catcher.

  • Pirates' Chris Stewart: Sent to DL with hamstring strain

Stewart was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained left hamstring. While it was originally thought Stewart wasn't going to need a trip to the DL, the Pirates have decided to err on the side of caution with the 35-year-old backstop. Stewart was slashing .225/.295/.350 through 16 games (40 at-bats) before landing on the DL. Stewart will be eligible to return on June 8, while Elias Diaz was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis and will serve as the Pirates' backup catcher in his absence.

  • Pirates' Chris Stewart: Should be alright after hamstring injury

Stewart suffered a minor hamstring injury in Monday's game against Arizona and is expected to be fine, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports. Consider Stewart day-to-day for now. The Pirates may choose to let Stewart rest the leg, which could mean a couple of consecutive starts for fellow backstop Francisco Cervelli, but Stewart shouldn't need a trip to the disabled list.

  • Pirates' Chris Stewart: Leaves with leg injury

Stewart left Monday's game early with an apparent left leg injury, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports. Stewart was taken out of the game for a pinch runner after knocking a triple. More should be known about his status following the conclusion of Monday's contest.

  • Pirates' Chris Stewart: Heads to bench Saturday

Stewart is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks. Francisco Cervelli will draw back into the lineup and spell Stewart on Saturday with the Pirates facing Taijuan Walker. Stewart got the start Friday, but went 0-for-3 on the night. At this point, it appears Stewart will continue to see infrequent playing time behind Cervelli.

  • Pirates' Chris Stewart: Draws second straight start Monday

Stewart will start at catcher and bat eighth in the order Monday against the Reds, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. With Francisco Cervelli (foot) nursing a foot injury, Stewart will be behind the dish for the second day in a row after going 1-for-3 with a walk in Sunday's game against the Marlins. Cervelli has said that he doesn't expect to land on the disabled list, so if that holds true, Stewart will only be in line for a short-term run as the Pirates' primary option behind the plate.
