Simpson was optioned to Triple-A Rochester after Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Cardinals.
Simpson will head back to Rochester after making four appearances with Washington following his promotion Sept. 1 and allowing five runs over 4.1 innings. Southpaw pitcher DJ Herz (elbow) is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list Monday to replace Simpson on the 28-man active roster.

Simpson will serve as the Nationals' opening pitcher in a bullpen game Wednesday against the Phillies, Mark Zuckerman of NatsJournal.com reports.
Washington will lean on its bullpen to get through Wednesday's series finale in an effort to buy some extra rest for Cade Cavalli, who has already pitched 164.2 innings this season. Simpson will take the mound to begin the game, despite coughing up three runs without recording an out in his last appearance. He'll likely remain in the game for a few frames before turning things over to another reliever.

The Nationals selected Simpson's contract from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic reports.
Simpson has split this season between Double-A Harrisburg and Rochester, logging a 2.30 ERA and 73:38 K:BB over 58.2 innings. The 26-year-old southpaw will be making his major-league debut when/if he enters a game.
