Jimenez announced his retirement from professional baseball Thursday.
After receiving his release from the Rockies in July when he failed to win an Opening Day roster spot out of summer camp, Jimenez had committed to pitch in the Dominican Winter League for Tigres del Licey. However, rather than attempting to use the DWL as a potential springboard for a MLB return, the 36-year-old Jimenez has opted to call an end to his career. Jimenez enjoyed the best years of his career in Colorado, earning his lone All-Star nod during a brilliant 2010 campaign in which he threw the first no-hitter in franchise history to go along with a 2.88 ERA to go with 214 strikeouts over 221.2 innings. He struggled to recapture that form after being traded to the Indians the following year and was out of the big leagues entirely following his age-33 season in 2017. Jimenez will retire with a career 114-117 record, 4.34 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over his 12 years in the majors.

Jimenez is 36 years old and has been out of affiliated baseball since the end of the 2017 season, so it's hardly surprising to see him scuffling in his comeback bid. He's allowed nine runs (five earned) while striking out just 2 batters in 5.1 innings so far this spring. He doesn't look like one of Colorado's five best starters at the moment, but he could prove he's still a viable option after working his way back into game shape at the Triple-A level.

Jimenez last pitched in 2017 for Baltimore, where he finished the season with a 6.81 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and a 8.8 K/9 average. The 36-year-old was an All-Star with Colorado during the 2010 season, posting a 2.88 ERA and tallying 214 strikeouts. Jimenez will look to impress the big-league coaching staff this spring in an attempt to make the Rockies' roster and return successfully to the place where he began his prolonged career in the majors.

Manager Buck Showalter will go with a four-man rotation for the Orioles' five-game week, leaving no room for Jimenez or Chris Tillman. Jimenez, who was lit up for six runs over three innings in his last outing Sept. 22, carries a 6-11 record, 6.81 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over 142.2 frames on the season. He'll be a free agent this offseason and may struggle to garner more than a minor-league deal given his immense struggles during his four seasons in Baltimore.

All of the runs on Jimenez's ledger came via the home run in this one. Jed Lowrie and Ryon Healy both went deep in the first inning before the latter added a two-run shot in the fifth. He seemed to have turned things around with a string of respectable starts into mid-August, but he's allowed 11 runs in 9.1 innings over his last two starts. Jimenez continues to display inconsistency and will take a disappointing 6.57 ERA into next Monday's start against the Mariners.
