  • Padres' Mason Miller: Logs four-out save

Miller allowed a hit and struck out three without walking a batter over 1.1 scoreless innings to earn the save in Wednesday's 7-1 win over the Giants.

Miller entered the game with one on and two outs in the eighth inning and shut things down. The Padres proceeded to add four runs in their half of the eighth to give Miller plenty of cushion. This was his second save of the season, and he's added a 5:1 K:BB over 2.1 scoreless innings so far. He is firmly locked into the closer role, and Wednesday's outing shows manager Craig Stammen won't hesitate to ask him to cover more than one frame if necessary.

  • Padres' Ramon Laureano: Clubs homer in win

Laureano went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a second run scored in Wednesday's 7-1 win over the Giants.

Laureano gave the Padres some breathing room with his eighth-inning blast. This was his second multi-hit effort in five contests this season, and he's added two home runs, four RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base while batting .389 so far. Laureano was given a full day off Tuesday and started at designated hitter for the first time this season Wednesday. While he may not play the field all the time, he should be in the lineup most of the time, as long as he continues to hit well.

  • Padres' Nick Pivetta: Rebounds in second start

Pivetta (1-1) allowed one hit and two walks while striking out eight over five scoreless innings to earn the win over the Giants on Wednesday.

Pivetta's first start of the season was rough, but he bounced back in his second outing. In the 2025 regular season, he had eight outings with at least eight strikeouts, and he won six of those games with no-decisions in the other two. The right-hander now has a 6.75 ERA and a 12:5 K:BB across eight innings over his two starts this season. He is tentatively lined up to make his first road start of the year in Pittsburgh next week, which could be his first outing of a two-start week.

  • Padres' Miguel Andujar: Not starting Wednesday

Andujar is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Giants.

Andujar and Nick Castellanos shared the designated-hitter spot through the first five games, but neither player will be in the lineup Wednesday. Ramon Laureano will receive a day off from playing the outfield, but he'll stay in the starting nine at DH while Bryce Johnson takes his spot on defense. Andujar has struggled out of the gate thus far, going 2-for-12 with a walk and two RBI, so he'll need to raise his production in order to gain traction in the everyday lineup.

  • Padres' Nick Castellanos: Heading to bench Wednesday

Castellanos is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Giants.

Castellanos and Miguel Andujar shared the designated-hitter spot through the first five games, but neither player will be in the lineup Wednesday. Ramon Laureano will receive a day off from playing the outfield, but he'll stay in the starting nine at DH while Bryce Johnson takes his spot on defense. Castellanos has thus far gone 2-for-12 with a double and a walk, so he'll need to raise his production before solidifying an everyday role.

  • Padres' German Marquez: Knocked around in Padres debut

Marquez (0-1) took the loss against San Francisco on Tuesday, allowing four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out one batter over three innings.

Marquez finished spring with a pair of promising outings, but he couldn't carry over any momentum into his first start of the regular season. The veteran right-hander gave up three runs in the first inning and another in the third, and he needed 65 pitches to get through three frames. Marquez gave up a whopping eight hits (including two homers and a double) during his short time on the mound, and his final line could have been even worse had he not escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the second. Marquez is filling a spot at the end of San Diego's rotation for the time being, but he'll likely need to pitch much better to keep a starting role once Joe Musgrove (elbow) and Griffin Canning (Achilles) are ready to return to action.

  • Padres' Ramon Laureano: Heading to bench Tuesday

Laureano is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Giants, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

After starting the first four games of the season and going 5-for-14 with a double, a homer and a stolen base, Laureano will receive a day off Tuesday. Nick Castellanos will take over in left field while Miguel Andujar receives a start at designated hitter.

  • Padres' Griffin Canning: Going on rehab assignment

Canning (Achilles) will start for Double-A San Antonio on a rehab assignment Saturday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Canning is nearing a return from a torn Achilles that he suffered last June while with the Mets. The right-hander inked a one-year deal with San Diego last month and could be a candidate for the Padres' rotation once healthy. Walker Buehler and German Marquez are currently occupying the fourth and fifth spots in the rotation for San Diego, but Buehler was hit hard in his first start Monday against the Giants.

  • Padres' Jackson Merrill: Prevents shutout with late blast

Merrill went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Monday in a loss to the Giants.

The Padres were down to their last out and in danger of being shut out before Merrill breathed life into the offense with a two-run blast off Giants closer Ryan Walker. The long ball was Merrill's first of the season and just his third hit through 15 at-bats. The Padres offense has been struggling as a whole, and Merrill will be among those most counted on to turn things around for the team given his spot in the middle of the lineup.

  • Padres' Walker Buehler: Takes loss in Padres debut

Buehler (0-1) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three batters over four innings in a loss to San Francisco on Monday.

After signing with the Padres on a minor-league deal in mid-February, Buehler pitched well enough during spring training to earn a spot in the team's Opening Day rotation. The right-hander got through two scoreless innings in his regular-season debut, but Buehler fell behind on a solo homer off the bat of Harrison Bader in the third frame. Things got worse for Buehler in the fourth, as the Giants struck for two more runs on three singles and a walk. Overall, Buehler threw 43 of 72 pitches for strikes and notched eight whiffs. He's likely to get more opportunities to start, though Walker will probably need to pitch better to remain in the rotation when Griffin Canning (Achilles) and Joe Musgrove (elbow) eventually return from the IL.

  • Padres' Jason Adam: Set for back-to-back rehab outings

Adam (quadriceps) will throw a simulated game Tuesday before making back-to-back rehab appearances with Double-A San Antonio on Friday and Saturday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Making rehab appearances on back-to-back days is typically the final hurdle a pitcher needs to clear before rejoining the major-league roster, so Adam appears set for activation from the 15-day injured list when first eligible April 6. The veteran reliever is getting a late start to the season following surgery last September to repair a ruptured left quadriceps tendon. Adam will work in a setup role in front of closer Mason Miller.

  • Padres' Freddy Fermin: Yields to Campusano on Monday

Fermin is not in the lineup for Monday's contest against the Giants.

Fermin and Luis Campusano have alternated starts at catcher in the first four games of the season for the Padres. It will be Campusano catching and batting ninth in Monday's series opener.

  • Padres' Nick Castellanos: Another start against righty

Castellanos will start at designated hitter and bat eighth in Monday's contest versus the Giants.

After yielding to Miguel Andujar at DH against lefties in the first two games of the season, Castellanos is now making a second straight start versus a righty. While Castellanos seems to have the early edge over Andujar in terms of playing time against right-handed pitching, there probably isn't a cemented hierarchy just yet. Gavin Sheets and Ty France are also vying for playing time in a crowded first base/DH situation for San Diego.

  • Padres' Miguel Andujar: Out of lineup againt right-hander

Andujar is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants.

Andujar started at designated hitter in each of the first two games of the season versus lefties. However, he's now sat two straight against righties in favor of Nick Castellanos. It's too soon to know how exactly the playing time between the two players will shake out, but early indications are that Castellanos is the preferred guy against right-handed pitching.
