Team USA has made it official adding Anthony Davis and James Harden as roster finalists for the 2012 Olympic team.
Both players had been rumored as likely selections, but are now officially a part of the roster. The final 12-man U.S. Olympic team roster will be announced later this year.
“After a lot of deliberations, after reviewing our roster, we think these two additions strengthen our National Team program immeasurably," said chairman Jerry Colangelo in release. "James Harden probably is the sixth man of the year in the NBA, and Anthony Davis brings a dimension to our pool we don’t have. He’s young, but it’s exciting to think about the possibilities."
Said Davis in the release: "It’s a tremendous honor to be this young and have a chance to represent my country. This is a great opportunity and I’m excited to be a part of something like this."
Davis of course led Kentucky to a 38-2 record and a national championship as only a freshman. The expected No. 1 overall pick, Davis averaged team highs of 14.2 ppg., 10.4 rpg. and 4.7 bpg., while adding 1.3 apg. and 1.4 spg. He shot 62.3 percent from the floor and 70.9 percent from the foul line. His 186 blocks is the most all-time in the SEC.
Harden, the likely Sixth Man of the Year, has had his best season as a pro off the Thunder's bench averaging 16.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game while shooting 49.1 percent from the floor and 39 percent from 3.
“Being named as a finalist for the USA Basketball National Team is an unbelievable feeling and an opportunity that is truly humbling. It is an honor to be included with such talented players and I look forward to the chance to represent my country this summer,” said Harden.
Harden is one of three Thunder players on the Team USA roster, joining Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.
The final roster that goes to London will be narrowed to 12 players, as well as six alternates. Currently in the player pool for Team USA is LaMarcus Aldridge (Portland Trail Blazers); Carmelo Anthony (New York Knicks); Chauncey Billups (Los Angeles Clippers); Chris Bosh (Miami Heat); Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers); Tyson Chandler (New York Knicks); Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder); Rudy Gay (Memphis Grizzlies); Eric Gordon (New Orleans Hornets); Blake Griffin (Los Angeles Clippers); Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic); Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia 76ers); LeBron James (Miami Heat); Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves); Lamar Odom (Dallas Mavericks); Chris Paul (Los Angeles Clippers); Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls); Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat); Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder); and Deron Williams (New Jersey Nets).
However, because of injury, Aldridge, Howard and Rose wll not participate, and the expectation is that Odom will be dropped as well. Colangelo said recently Team USA wouldn't be making any additions, but that was prior to the Rose injury, which obviously changed his mind.
Also, because of the injury to Howard, Davis has a realistic chance to make the final 12-man roster as Team USA needs size on the interior in the worst way. Harden, who is extremely versatile, probably doesn't have as much a shot as the U.S. is pretty stacked at the guard positions.
Team USA opens Olympic training camp in Las Vegas July 6.
