Chargers RB Ryan Mathews was limited in practice Monday. It was his first participation since he broke his right clavicle in the preseason opener. Mathews was originally expected to be out four to six weeks with the earliest possible return being Week 2 against the Titans. Mathews has said all along his goal is to play in the season opener against the Raiders on Sept. 10.
“I went through individual [drills],” Mathews said of his work Monday. “I just caught some passes and got back into the groove of everything. That’s basically it.
“I am very hopeful. In my mind, [I’ll be ready]. But you never know. Just take it day-by-day. If everything goes as planned, I am there Monday night.”
Mathews acknowledged there are concerns about him coming back too soon.
“Getting hit on [the right side] I think is the main thing to worry about,” Mathews said.
Owusu added to practice squad: WR Chris Owusu (undrafted, rookie, Stanford) was added to the practice squad Sunday. Owusu, 6-0, 196, had the second fastest 40-yard dash at the combine at 4.36 seconds. Owusu was released from the 49ers on Friday.
