Training camp begins for the Chiefs Friday and everyone but receiver Dwayne Bowe is in camp. Other than that, it's mostly good news for the Chiefs, including the signing of their top draft pick. Find out what else is going on around the team as the Chiefs head to camp.
Poe signs
The Kansas City Star reported that it's believed Dontari Poe's contract is a four-year deal worth about $11 million. Poe was not made available to comment on Thursday but his mother spoke to the Star.
"It’s such a relief," Sandra Poe said. "I can breathe now. I'm pretty sure Dontari can. He's kind of anxious. I didn't have any doubts he'd sign. He was pretty confident he would be there and not miss many days. He's all in good spirits and excited."
Coach Romeo Crennel says Poe is going to have to earn his spot as a starter. Five of the Chiefs last seven first-round draft picks have started in Week 1. The last four defensive players taken by the Chiefs in the first round (Tambi Hali, Glenn Dorsey, Tyson Jackson and Eric Berry) have all opened the season as starters.
Chiefs add offensive tackle
The Chiefs added some depth at offensive tackle with the sigining of veteran Tony Ugoh. Ugoh played in three games last year with the Giants and started one. The five-year pro spent his first three seasons with the Colts, who drafted him in the second round out of Arkansas. In 37 games with the Colts, he made 27 starts.
Ugoh and third-round pick Donald Stephenson are expected to be the top two backups at tackle.
ESPN's Bill Williamson writes Dwayne Bowe is not gaining anything from sitting out and he needs to sign his tender and get to camp.
Bowe, who the Chiefs placed the franchise tag on in the offseason, has no negotiating power -- he can either send his one-year contract worth about $9.5 million or sit out this season. As reported on Wednesday, both sides would benefit from Bowe signing his deal.
Best Pioli team?
Kansas City Star columnist Kent Babb writes that this should be the best team that Scott Pioli has assembled in KC. The Chiefs have more depth than in past years and few question marks.
The Chiefs improved their defense by drafting Poe and should get a big lift from the return of Berry at safety. On offense, Kansas City's running game and pass blocking should improve with the signing of right tackle Eric Winston. As long as Bowe signs, Matt Cassel should have enough weapons around him to lead this team to a 10-win season, Babb believes.
