NFL preseason Week 1: Tua Tagovailoa struggles as Broncos crush Falcons; De'Von Achane scores touchdown

A preseason Week 1 Friday night triple-header is in the books, and the day as a whole could not have gone much worse for the Falcons.

First, the NFL handed down an eight-game suspension to edge defender James Pearce Jr., a 2025 first-round pick. The suspension stems from a Feb. 7 incident with ex-girlfriend (and current Chicago Sky standout) Rickea Jackson and comes just over a week after Pearce's fellow Falcons 2025 first-round EDGE, Jalon Walker, tore his ACL.

If there had been any hope that getting on the football field would turn the day around, those hopes evaporated quickly. After the Broncos quickly drove down the field for a touchdown -- highlighted by Courtland Sutton mossing defenders not once but twice -- Tua Tagovailoa fumbled his second snap. Atlanta managed just one first down across Tagovailoa's two drives, and with Michael Penix Jr.. (knee) still sidelined, it hasn't been the most inspiring quarterback competition.

Cooper Rush then came in and threw two interceptions, including a pick-six to Jahdae Barron, and the Broncos rolled 27-7.

De'Von Achane scores a touchdown as Commanders beat Dolphins; Buccaneers beat Jets

The Dolphins played their starters one series, and it couldn't have gone much better. Against mostly Commanders' backups, Miami drove 93 yards on 14 plays and capped the drive with a 1-yard De'Von Achane plunge.

Earlier in the drive, rookie wide receiver Caleb Douglas made arguably the catch of the night.

The Commanders won 20-7, but they'll be monitoring the status of backup quarterback Marcus Mariota, who left with an apparent knee injury.

In New York, the Buccaneers beat the Jets 24-16. Neither quarterback started -- Baker Mayfield was never expected to play, and Geno Smith sat with mild foot soreness. For New York, Garrett Wilson had two receptions for 32 yards, and Braelon Allen had a 31-yard touchdown run. Ayden Garnes had a 47-yard pick-six for the visitors, who did not play their starters.

Commanders racking up picks

After allowing the Dolphins' starting offense to go right down the field and score, the Commanders' defense has dominated. Quan Martin picked off Quinn Ewers in the first half, and Ale Kaho and Malik Spencer now have picks off of Cam Miller on back-to-back possessions here in the fourth quarter.

Jahdae Barron to the crib!

It's been a bad, bad day for the Falcons. Pass rusher James Pearce Jr. was suspended eight games, and after a lackluster start by Tua Tagovailoa, Cooper Rush has come in and thrown two interceptions. This one, by Jahdae Barron, went 95 yards the other way for a touchdown.

Good jump on the ball here by Karene Reid.

Pick six! Ayden Garnes with the first defensive touchdown of the preseason

Welcome to the NFL end zone, Ayden Garnes! The undrafted rookie out of Arizona stepped in front of a Bailey Zappe pass and took it 47 yards to the house.

On Zappe's very next throw, it was Rashad Wisdom doing the honors.

Chase Bisontis (MCL) to miss most if not all of 2026

Cardinals second-round guard Chase Bisontis tore his MCL in Thursday's preseason game and will need surgery, causing him to miss most -- if not all -- of the 2026 season, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. It's a tough blow for Arizona, which was expecting to start Bisontis from the get-go this season.

Tua Tagovailoa's day is over after two series

Well, Tua Tagovailoa's first (unofficial) start with the Falcons didn't go exactly as planned. The former Dolphin went 3 for 5 for 22 yards through the air and added a run for 0 yards. He mishandled his second snap, which kind of set the tone for the day.

The Falcons did not score on either of the two drives Tagovailoa led and had just one first down under his direction. The Broncos lead 17-0 early in the second quarter.

Braelon Allen to the house!

They don't make many speed/size combinations like Braelon Allen, and he showed those two attributes -- plus plenty of patience and vision -- on this long touchdown run.

Allen, who is entering his third season, is still just 22 years old.

Marcus Mariota heads to the locker room

Mariota took a sizable hit on a nice third-down completion, and one snap later, he went to the ground after a handoff and was clearly in pain. He exited with trainers under his own power but had to go back to the locker room. We'll keep an eye on that one. Sam Hartman entered the game.

Garrett Wilson, Courtland Sutton making plays

We're only a few minutes into this 7 p.m. ET preseason triple-header, but the pass catchers are showing out. Garrett Wilson shows some major strength at the catch point.

And in Atlanta, Courtland Sutton made ANOTHER ridiculous catch.

Oh my goodness, Caleb Douglas! ... and De'Von Achane caps off the drive

The rookie wide receiver has been impressing, but this catch is on another level.

There are opportunities aplenty among Dolphins pass catchers, and Douglas will look to make the most of his.

De'Von Achane scored a short touchdown. Good start for the Dolphins' starting offense.

Courtland Sutton in midseason form

Courtland Sutton is coming off consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, and it's plays like these that have gotten him there.

No Bo Nix for Denver tonight, but Jarrett Stidham was sharp on the opening drive, and Adam Prentice scored from 1 yard out. Not the best start for Atlanta's defense.
