Chargers' Jeff Cumberland: Set to join Chargers
The Chargers will sign Cumberland to a contract this week, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM Radio reports.
The Chargers already have four tight ends on the roster, suggesting that Cumberland's addition may be a byproduct of one of those other options at the position dealing with a yet-to-be-disclosed injury. Whether that's in fact the case or not, Cumberland will still be buried on the depth chart and is unlikely to see an abundance of snaps on offense. Cumberland last appeared in the league with the Jets in 2015, hauling in five of 14 targets for 77 yards and no scores.

Jeff Cumberland: Released by Chargers
Cumberland was released by the Chargers on Saturday, Ricky Henne of the team's official site reports.
The fact Cumberland wasn't released with an injury settlement suggests he's past the hamstring injury that bothered him last week. As a vested veteran, he's immediately eligible to sign with another team.

Chargers' Jeff Cumberland: Nursing hamstring
Cumberland did not practice Wednesday due to a hamstring issue, Eric Williams of ESPN reports.
Coming off an Achilles tear, Cumberland has been slowed down so far during training camp due to leg soreness. It appears he now has a hamstring issue as a result of adjusting for the injury. The veteran tight end is currently slotted fourth on the depth chart, so a return to the practice field will significantly help his chances of making the final roster.

Cumberland (leg) will not play in Sunday's preseason game against the Seahawks, Eric D. Williams of ESPN reports.
Cumberland missed Friday's practice due to leg soreness and it appears that ailment is extending into this next week of practice. The Chargers will likely remain cautious with the tight end, especially since he is coming off an Achilles tear. Cumberland is expected to enter the season as No. 3 on the depth chart at best behind both Hunter Henry and Antonio Gates.

Cumberland has been one the stars of training camp thus far, routinely using his speed to fly by mismatched linebackers. That being said, the veteran TE figures to see only a small amount of playing time, with Hunter Henry, Antonio Gates and Sean McGrath (knee) listed above him on the depth chart. It's unclear whether Cumberland will participate in Sunday's preseason game against the Seahawks, but more information should come in the following days.

Cumberland is officially healthy and has been one of the early standouts during training camp, Rickey Henne of the Chargers' official site reports.
Cumberland missed all of last year after tearing his Achilles in the preseason, so it's good to hear the veteran has assimilated back into the fold nicely. However, he's unlikely to see all that much time on the field, as he's blocked by future Hall of Famer Antonio Gates and standout second-year tight end Hunter Henry on the depth chart.

Chargers' Jeff Cumberland: Officially signs with Chargers
Cumberland (Achilles) signed a one-year contract to stay with the Chargers on Wednesday.
Cumberland also signed a one-year deal with the Chargers last year, ultimately missing the entire campaign after tearing an Achilles during the preseason. He should be available for training camp, where he'll likely compete with Sean McGrath, Asante Cleveland and Jake McGee for the No. 3 tight end role behind Hunter Henry and Antonio Gates. Cumberland had at least 23 catches and three touchdowns in three straight seasons (2012-2014) with the Jets, but he'll turn 30 in May and is now with a team that has far more talent at his position.

Signed by the Chargers last offseason, Cumberland suffered a torn Achilles during the preseason and subsequently missed the entire year. Even if he returns to full strength, he'll merely be competing for the No. 3 spot on the depth chart behind Hunter Henry and Antonio Gates. Cumberland could enter camp as a long shot to make the final roster.
