  • Latavius Murray: Announces retirement

Murray announced his retirement from the NFL on Thursday, Chad Jensen of SI.com reports.

Murray, now 35 years old, suited up for 11 seasons in the NFL between the Raiders, Vikings, Saints, Ravens, Broncos and Bills, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2015. While he surpassed the 1,000 rushing yard mark just once in his career, in 2015 with the Raiders, Murray was a stalwart contributor in terms of consistency, ranking above the 4.0 YPC threshold in nine of his 11 campaigns played. As Jensen notes, Murray remains the most recent running back to rush for 100 yards in a single game for Denver, which he accomplished versus the Chargers in the 2022 regular-season finale.

  • Bills' Latavius Murray: Tails off at season's end

Murray finished the season with 79 carries for 300 yards and two touchdowns plus 17 catches (on 22 targets) for 119 yards in 16 regular-season games.

Murray saw some run as the No. 2 back for a good stretch of the season, and it led to some nice results, with him peaking on a 6-68-1 line in Week 12. After the team's bye in Week 13, however, Murray saw only nine carries the entire remainder of the season. While he suited up in the playoffs, he didn't see a single carry. Ty Johnson clearly passed Murray in the pecking order for the stretch run. Murray turned 34 last month, and while he still ran with some power and proved to be a nice veteran asset for the Bills as an complement to James Cook, he probably doesn't have much more football left in his fine career.

  • Bills' Latavius Murray: Won't suit up Week 18

Murray has been ruled a healthy scratch ahead of Sunday's game against the Bills.

Murray has seen his role continously decrease over the past few weeks as James Cook has taken on a larger workload over the same span. With addition of fellow veteran running back Leonard Fournette alongside core special-teamer and third-stringer Ty Johnson, it appears Murray is now the odd man out in this rotation. The 33-year-old will be sidelined for the first time this season Sunday.

  • Bills' Latavius Murray: Role shrinking

Murray had one carry for zero yards and failed to reel in his only target during Sunday's 27-21 win over the Patriots.

Murray has just the one carry over the past two games and hasn't exceeded 32 percent of the offensive snaps in any of the past four games. With James Cook thriving in the bellcow role and quarterback Josh Allen tied for second in the league with 15 rushing touchdowns, it's only scraps left for Murray and Ty Johnson, and now practice-squad member Leonard Fournette is even an option. All of this makes Murray a role player, not a fantasy target.

  • Bills' Latavius Murray: No carries for first time in 2023

Murray did not record a carry or target in Saturday's 24-22 win over the Chargers.

Murray has served as the No. 2 running back behind James Cook most of the season and leads all Buffalo running backs with four rushing touchdowns, but it's noteworthy that Leonard Fournette saw five carries in a tight game compared to none for Murray. Fournette -- who joined the Bills' practice squad in October -- has plenty of cred and is five years younger than Murray, so it'll be interesting to see how the Bills split up the backup carries the rest of the way. With Josh Allen up to 13 rushing touchdowns on the season, no one besides Cook holds anything more than speculative value in the Buffalo running back corps.
