The 49ers released Porter with an injury settlement Tuesday.
Porter signed with the 49ers after being waived by Jacksonville back in May. He's primarily served as a special teams player during his four-year tenure in the NFL, and should he find his way back onto an NFL team's final roster, that's likely the role he'd continue to have.

The four-year vet has served primarily as a special teams player during his short NFL career. With the Jaguars looking to add some depth at the linebacker position, Porter became expendable.

Jaguars' Sean Porter: Heading to IR
Porter (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.
Porter injured his hamstring in Week 15 and missed the Jaguars' Week 16 game against the Titans. Porter had spent much of the season on the practice squad and hadn't recorded any tackles in two games played for Jacksonville this season. The team should move on just fine in his absence.

Jaguars' Sean Porter: Promoted to active roster
Porter was promoted to the active roster Tuesday.
The Jaguars promoted Porter after waiving veteran linebacker Arthur Brown. The 2013 fourth-round pick hasn't played on an NFL field since 2014 due to various injuries. He'll now back up Dan Skuta, who is dealing with an elbow injury this week.
