AJ McCarron: Cut by Bengals
Cincinnati released McCarron on Wednesday.
McCarron joined the Bengals back in November as a depth option, after the team lost starting quarterback Joe Burrow (wrist) to a season-ending injury. The veteran appeared in two contest for the team in relief of fill-in starter Jake Browning, but now McCarron will have to search for a reserve gig elsewhere in free agency.

Bengals' AJ McCarron: Gets full-time promotion
The Bengals signed McCarron to their active roster Monday.
As the only other quarterback on the active roster, McCarron figures to step in as the backup to Jake Browning at Jacksonville. Browning has actually played relatively well for a backup in his two games with extended action this season, so it's reasonable to expect Cincinnati will stick with him unless he regresses or gets hurt.

AJ McCarron: Reverts to practice squad
McCarron reverted to the Bengals' practice squad Monday.
McCarron was active for Sunday's loss to Pittsburgh but didn't see any playing time. The 2014 fifth-round pick served as the backup to Jake Browning with Joe Burrow (wrist) out, and McCarron should have another opportunity to do so versus the Jaguars next week.

Bengals' AJ McCarron: Elevated to active roster
McCarron has been elevated to the Bengals' active roster ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Steelers.
This move was expected, as Joe Burrow (wrist) was placed on injured reserve in a corresponding move. McCarron is now set to back up Jake Browning under center. The veteran former has not seen the field for regular-season action since 2020 with the Texans.

AJ McCarron: Joins Cincinnati's practice squad
The Bengals signed McCarron to their practice squad Saturday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
The move comes as starter Joe Burrow (calf) has been listed as questionable for Monday's matchup against the Rams. McCarron beat out Trace McSorley in a workout Saturday for the spot. If Burrow is unable to suit up, expect McCarron to take on the backup spot behind Jake Browning.

AJ McCarron: Tries out with Cleveland
The Browns worked out McCarron for a potential backup QB role Thursday, Chris Easterling of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
McCarron was brought in to work out along with Josh Rosen as Cleveland looks to add insurance behind backup quarterbacks Jacoby Brissett and Joshua Dobbs. Presumptive starter Deshaun Watson is still awaiting a decision in regard to a potential suspension for violations of the NFL's personal conduct policy, so the Browns will want to look at as many capable options at signal-caller as possible in the meantime. McCarron could provide just that as he is fully recovered from a torn ACL that forced him to miss the entirety of the 2021 campaign. The 31-year-old journeyman appeared in 17 regular-season games with four starts over the first six years of his career, and he last saw meaningful playing time in Week 17 of the 2019 season with Houston.

AJ McCarron: Healthy and looking for NFL job
McCarron (knee) said Monday that he feels great and is "waiting for a call" to return to an NFL roster, Mark Inabinett of AL.com reports.
McCarron signed with the Falcons last offseason to serve as the backup to Matt Ryan, but the former Alabama quarterback suffered a torn ACL during a preseason game and missed the entire campaign. Now a free agent, McCarron is looking to return to an NFL roster, but it's unclear if he'll get an opportunity in 2022. "You never know what the future holds," McCarron said. "I'm just ready, waiting for a call. But right now, I'm enjoying my time off and being able to be a dad for the first time in a while."
