  • Saints' Tyrann Mathieu: Continuing to nurse heel injury

Mathieu (heel) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.

Mathieu had been dealing with the heel injury leading up to Week 2 against the Cowboys, but he was able to suit up for that contest after starting the week as a DNP. The fact that he started this week as a limited participant suggests that the 2013 third-round pick is progressing through the injury, and barring any setbacks, he should be good to go for Week 3 against the Eagles. Through the first two games of the season, Mathieu has accrued seven solo tackles, two passes defended, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

  • Saints' Tyrann Mathieu: Ready for Sunday

Mathieu (heel) has no injury designation ahead of Sunday's matchup with the Cowboys, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.

The 12-year veteran went from logging a DNP on Wednesday to a full practice session Friday, indicating that he's moved past his heel injury. Mathieu recorded four total tackles and one forced fumble during the Saints' Week 1 win, and he'll look to build on that impressive showing Sunday.

  • Saints' Tyrann Mathieu: Gets on field

Mathieu (heel) was a limited participant during practice Thursday.

Mathieu missed practice Wednesday, so this is a step in the right direction for the veteran safety and puts him on a trajectory to suit up Sunday against the Cowboys. However, his status on Friday's injury report will be worth monitoring.

  • Saints' Tyrann Mathieu: Misses practice with heel injury

Mathieu (heel) did not practice Wednesday.

Mathieu is coming off a dominant Week 1 performance against the Panthers, in which he tallied four solo tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. The star safety's availability will be crucial for the Saints as the team prepares to take on the Cowboys on Sunday, so it will be worth monitoring whether Mathieu is able to do more in practice Thursday and/or Friday.

  • Saints' Tyrann Mathieu: Recovers fumble vs. Panthers

Mathieu registered four solo tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in Sunday's 47-10 win over the Panthers.

Mathieu punched the ball out of Jonathan Mingo's hands in the second quarter of Sunday's game, and the former was able to recover the fumble, leading to a 52-yard field goal by Blake Grupe seven plays later. Mathieu registered all four of his tackles in the first half and finished the game playing just 25 defensive snaps, but that was due to game script and the Saints' large lead. The 2013 third-round pick will see a much tougher challenge against Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and the Cowboys in Week 2.

  • Saints' Tyrann Mathieu: Inks new deal with New Orleans

The Saints re-signed Mathieu on a two-year, $13 million contract Thursday, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reports.

The 31-year-old has officially agreed to terms to stay in New Orleans after spending the last two years with the team. Despite a slight drop in his numbers in 2023, Mathieu remained effective, tallying 75 total tackles and nine passes defended, including four interceptions through 17 regular-season contests. Assuming he can avoid injury, the 2013 third-rounder should maintain his every-down role as the Saints' starting free safety in 2024.
