Antwione Williams: Exits Carolina
Williams was waived by the Panthers on Friday, Max Henson of the team's official website reports.
Williams' only NFL action came in 2016, when he suited up for 14 games -- including three starts -- with the Lions. He was competing with a plethora of other linebackers for a chance to provide depth at the position, but was unable to show enough.

Antwione Williams: Waived by Lions
Williams was waived by the Lions on Saturday, Josina Anderson of ESPN reports.
This is a surprising development given the experience Williams received in his rookie year coupled with the fact he seemed to be in the mix for a starting role in 2017. The Lions are probably hoping he'll clear waivers and be able to stash him on their practice squad.

Lions' Antwione Williams: Showing improvement in second season
Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin said Williams is "a ton, ton better" so far this offseason compared to Williams' rookie year, Paula Pasche of The Oakland Press reports."[Williams is] much more urgent in terms of how he's attacking the game, really is seeing and understands the scheme better, so he's reacting faster and he's a big man that can run,'' Austin said. "So, he's really done some good things throughout this offseason, really like where he's going right now."
After being taken in the fifth round of the 2016 draft, Williams was thrown into the fire his rookie season after the Lions' linebacking corps suffered a slew of injuries. His performance had its ups and downs, but it seems a full offseason in the pros is really helping him understand his role on defense. Although he's in the mix for a starting job in 2017, it seems more likely than not he opens the season rotating in behind Paul Worrilow and Tahir Whitehead. However, given his offseason reviews, Williams seems like a good bet to improve upon his 204 defensive snaps from 2016. In turn, the Georiga Southern product also appears to have favorable odds of topping his first-year totals of 27 tackles and one fumble recovery.

Lions' Antwione Williams: In mix for starting role
Williams has a chance to enter training camp as the Lions' starting strongside linebacker, Dave Birkett of The Detroit Free Press reports.
Williams, a fifth-round pick last season, received more playing time than expected as a rookie due to the flurry of injuries that hit the Lions' linebacker corps. After Detroit signed Paul Worrilow in free agency and took Jarrad Davis in the first round of the draft his past April, Williams looked to be on the outs for a spot on the first team, but Davis is locked into the middle spot while both Tahir Whitehead and Worrilow fit in better at weakside linebacker than on the strong side. If Williams can secure a starting role in advance of Week 1, Williams would be a safe bet to improve upon the 201 snaps (19.9 percent of the Lions' total defensive plays) and 27 tackles he logged in 2016.

Lions' Antwione Williams: Will play Sunday
Williams (hamstring) is active for Sunday's game against the Bears and is expected to start.
Williams was limited in practice on Thursday as he continued to nurse a hamstring injury that kept him out of Week 3's loss to the Packers. With DeAndre Levy (quadriceps) out once again, the rookie Williams will get another opportunity to start, as he filled in for the veteran linebacker in Week 2. Head coach Jim Caldwell said of Williams' Week 2 performance, "Young, tough, aggressive, learning." He recorded four tackles (two solo) in Week 2 and will look to put together a similar performance in Chicago this Sunday.

Lions' Antwione Williams: Limited participant Thursday
Williams (hamstring) was a limited participant in practice on Thursday.
Williams missed last week's loss against Green Bay due to the hamstring injury he suffered against the Titans the week prior, and Thursday marks the first time he's practiced in any fashion since sustaining the injury. His odds of playing are undoubtedly better if he's able to practice, and he will likely start if he's healthy enough to play against the Bears on Sunday.

Lions' Antwione Williams: Ruled out for Week 3
Williams (hamstring) will not play on Sunday, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
With starter DeAndre Levy (quadriceps) also ruled out, the Lions will have just two healthy outside linebackers available against the Packers.

Lions' Antwione Williams: Doubtful for Sunday
Williams (hamstring) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Packers.
Williams sustained a hamstring injury during last Sunday's loss to the Titans and was consequently not able to practice this week. With him not expected to be available Sunday, and DeAndre Levy (quad) is also considered doubtful, the Lions' linebacking corps appears rather thin ahead of this weekend's divisional clash in Green Bay.

Lions' Antwione Williams: Questionable to return
Williams is questionable to return after suffering a thigh injury during the Lions' Week 2 matchup against the Titans, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.
He walked off the field under his own power, but the specifics of his injury are unclear at this time. His absence leaves the Lions with only three healthy linebackers, but DE Brandon Copeland could conceivably fill in, if needed.
