Player Outlook
The Dolphins didn't take many steps to improve their defense after it had just 39 sacks and nine interceptions in 2025. Their best pass rushers are Chop Robinson, Zach Sieler and Josh Uche. Their secondary got an interesting boost in rookie first-round cornerback Chris Johnson, but that's really about it. Rookie linebacker Jacob Rodriguez figures to be fun in the middle of the defense. It's really just not a great unit - you may only consider starting them when they take on the Jets, Raiders (in Week 1) and maybe the Colts. Outside of those 2026 matchups, this figures to be a DST to avoid.

  • Dolphins' JuJu Brents: Ready for training camp

    Brents is all set to participate in training camp, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports. Brents received foot surgery during the 2025 season after going down with a significant injury in November. The cornerback returns for a pivotal training camp, as cornerbacks Storm Duck (knee) and Darrell Baker (undisclosed) will be sidelined until midseason. If Brents can prove himself once again capable, he may enter Week 1 as the starting outside cornerback across from Chris Johnson.

    Coach Jeff Hafley stated Tuesday that Baker (undisclosed) likely will be out until midseason, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN.com reports. Baker joined the Dolphins in March as a healthy defensive back, but an unknown injury popped up in late July. With Storm Duck (knee) also set to return midseason, the team will be thin on defensive backs for opening day. JuJu Brents, Jason Marshall, Alex Austin and the remaining healthy defensive backs will have a chance to start Week 1 if they show out in training camp and the preseason.

  • Dolphins' Chop Robinson: Targeting increased role in 2026

    Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley said Tuesday that Robinson (concussion) "needs to become a complete football player going into Year 3 and we have high expectations for him," Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald reports. "Hopefully [Robinson] becomes an every-down player," Hafley said. The 2024 first-round pick missed Week 18 of the 2025 season due to a concussion, but he's been a full participant at voluntary OTAs, per Joe Schad of The Palm Beach Post. Robinson has flashed as a pass rusher, totaling 10.0 sacks across his first two seasons against the league, but his inconsistent performance against the run has limited his total workload, as he played just 415 defensive snaps across 15 regular-season appearances last year. Robinson has added seven pounds of muscle this offseason, which he hopes to help him transition into an every-down role following the release of Bradley Chubb (now with Buffalo).

    The Raiders signed Jones (back) on Wednesday. Jones appeared in 14 games with Miami in 2025, but he was shut down ahead of Week 17 with a back injury. Now, he's evidently in good shape for football activities again and is getting a shot with a new team. Las Vegas recently lost defensive tackle Leki Fotu to the Giants in free agency, and it's reasonable to suspect Jones could fill a similar role to the one Fotu left behind with the Raiders.

Johnson cleared waivers Tuesday, meaning he is now an unrestricted free agent and will be free to sign with any team once his health allows.   • Dolphins' Michael Taaffe: Packs bags for Miami

    The Dolphins selected Taaffe in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, 158th overall. Taaffe, out of Texas, started all 26 games over his final two collegiate seasons and generated 148 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, 15 pass breakups and four interceptions. He's an extremely aggressive safety who is comfortable as a run stopper and in coverage. His size is a serious question mark, however, as he measured in at 6-foot, 190 pounds while having some of the smallest arms for a safety in the draft. Taaffe's skills may not be enough to overcome his physical limitations, but there should be a clear path to a role on special teams.

  • Dolphins' Trey Moore: Nabbed by Dolphins

    The Dolphins selected Moore in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, 130th overall. Moore is a versatile option on the line but is a bit of a tweener between linebacker and edge rusher, standing 6-foot-1, 243 pounds. He didn't lack for production at the collegiate level, notching 14.0 sacks in 2023 at UTSA before transferring to Texas and compiling a combined 8.5 sacks and 70 tackles in his two seasons in Austin. He does a good job of staying low and keeping leverage in the run game but is undersized for an edge with arms on the shorter side that could lead to some trouble creating separation from opposing offensive linemen. It remains to be seen what the Dolphins plan to do with Moore, whether it be remaining on the edge or ultimately moving to linebacker. Either way, he's likely bound for special-teams duties as a rookie and will likely face a learning curve at the next level.

  • Dolphins' Jacob Rodriguez: Drafted by Dolphins

    The Dolphins selected Rodriguez in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, 43rd overall. Rodriguez (6-foot-1, 231 pounds) began his collegiate career at Virginia as a quarterback, but he spent the next four seasons with Texas Tech, where he transitioned to linebacker and truly broke out in 2024 and 2025. Last year, Rodriguez earned unanimous All-American honors (plus numerous other awards) and finished fifth in terms of Heisman Trophy voting, totaling 128 tackles, including 1.0 sacks and 11.0 tackles for loss, plus seven forced fumbles, six passes defensed and four interceptions across 14 games. Jordyn Brooks and Tyrel Dodson are both positioned to hit free agency after the 2026 season, providing Rodriguez with a clear path to a starting gig in 2027 at the latest. Whenever Rodriguez does step into a starting role, his three-down skill set and playmaking instinct could provide notable upside in IDP formats.
