Fantasy managers shouldn't expect the Jets DST to be a helpful option. The team will have as many as eight new starters, including rookies David Bailey and D'Angelo Ponds, but it might amount to a solid unit instead of one that dominates opponents, including both the Bills and Patriots twice each over the course of the year. Head coach Aaron Glenn knows he's on thin ice and intends to call plays this season, a move that isn't guaranteed to work out. At most, the Jets DST might be worth considering for their games against below-average offenses in Miami, Tennessee (in Week 1), Cleveland and maybe Las Vegas. They should be on the waiver wire for pickup those weeks.

Goodrich has spent time with the Giants, Broncos and Jets since joining the Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2022. The cornerback also spent some time playing for the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL, but he is ready to take another crack at NFL football. Goodrich has played in four NFL regular-season games, all in 2023, when he totaled five tackles (three solo) over 67 defensive snaps and 40 special-teams snaps.

    Ponds sustained a strained calf in Wednesday's practice, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports. Coach Aaron Glenn said it's not a serious injury for the rookie cornerback. Selected in the second round of April's 2026 NFL Draft, Ponds is fully expected to be a key contributor at cornerback in 2026.

Ossai is working through a minor injury and should not be stranded on the PUP list for too long. McDonald has tallied 18.5 sacks in 32 games over the last two seasons, so it comes as little surprise that the Jets have opted to keep him under their control through the end of the 2027 season. Even though the club recently used the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on defensive end David Bailey, McDonald figures to get about as much work as he can handle during the upcoming campaign.

  • Jets' VJ Payne: Reeled in by Jets

    The Jets selected Payne in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, 228th overall. Payne started 42 games as a four-year defensive back at Kansas State. In his final season, Payne posted 59 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, five pass breakups and an interception. The 22-year-old is a dependable tackler who played all around the formation in college. There's still work to do in coverage, but he's big (6-foot-3, 206 pounds) with some of the longest arms for a safety in the draft (33 and 6/8 inches), and his athleticism (4.40 40-yard dash) should make him a strong special-teams option if he can't crack the defensive rotation right away.

The Jets placed an exclusive rights tender on Briggs in early March, and the 2024 seventh-rounder will play on a league-minimum contract for the upcoming season. He saw his defensive snap count increase over the course of the 2025 regular season. Briggs played at least 65 percent of the Jets' defensive snaps in each of the final seven games of the regular season, and over that span he accumulated 25 tackles (11 solo), including 2.0 sacks. He'll likely work in a rotational role on the defensive line in 2026 behind T'Vondre Sweat and Harrison Phillips.

Walker was cut by the Cardinals at the end of training camp but he quickly caught on with the Jets on the practice squad in early September before being signed to the active roster in October. He worked in a rotational role on defense while serving on special teams and finished the 2025 regular season with 31 tackles (nine solo) and one pass defense across 14 games. Walker will likely reprise that role for the Jets in 2026.
