Falcons' Matt Simms: Lands on IR
Simms (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve by the Falcons on Sunday.
Simms was likely to be beaten out by Matt Schaub for the backup quarterback role anyway, but his injury sealed the deal. Since he was placed on injured reserve before the season began, Simms won't play in the 2019 season.

Falcons' Matt Simms: Sits out final two preseason games
Simms (undisclosed) missed Atlanta's last two preseason games with an injury, Kelsey Conway of the Falcons' official site reports.
The 30-year-old Simms rejoined the Falcons after Kurt Benkert suffered a toe injury in the Hall of Fame Game and made exhibition appearances against the Dolphins and Jets before being saddled with an injury of his own. The nature and severity of the issue has yet to be revealed, but Simms's absence does not bode well for what began as a puncher's chance at a 53-man roster spot. If he's able to return soon, he is a candidate for a practice squad spot, though Danny Etling -- who's demonstrated impressive rushing ability and competent passing -- may offer higher upside for such a role.

Falcons' Matt Simms: Turnover issues apparent
Simms completed nine of 19 attempts for 85 yards, committing one interception and losing two fumbles during Thursday's 22-10 loss to the Jets.
Playing against his former team -- the only franchise for which he's logged regular-season playing time -- Simms struggled throughout the second half of Thursday's exhibition as Atlanta dropped its 11th straight preseason contest. The 30-year-old signal caller was able to lead the Falcons into field-goal range on his second drive, but from there the offense's results on the subsequent five possessions were punt, fumble, punt, fumble, pick-six. Simms looks to bounce back in the "dress rehearsal" game Thursday against Washingotn.

Falcons' Matt Simms: Mixed bag in second-half relief
Simms completed eight of 17 pass attempts for 86 yards, adding three rushes for 13 yards during Thursday's 34-27 loss to the Dolphins. He also fumbled once, but the loose ball was recovered by teammate Dieugot Joseph.
Former Falcons practice squad player and quarterback of the AAF's Atlanta Legends, Simms saw his first action in an NFL regular or preseason game since August 2017. During the 2017 exhibition slate for the Falcons, Simms posted a 57.1 percent completion rate with 8.0 yards per attempt, one touchdown and one interception, but was cut before the start of the regular season and replaced by Kurt Benkert (toe) and Garrett Grayson as potential third-string options last summer. With Benkert having recently been placed on injured reserve, Simms has an opportunity to get some preseason reps with the Falcons, and potentially shoot for a backup job behind Matt Ryan and Matt Schaub with stellar performances over the next three weeks.

Falcons' Matt Simms: Returning to Atlanta
Simms signed a contract with the Falcons on Saturday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
This will be Simms' third stint with the Falcons, after spending time with the club on two separate occasions in 2016 and 2017. The 30-year-old hasn't seen regular-season NFL action since completing three passes on eight attempts for 39 yards against the Chiefs while with the Jets in Week 9 of the 2014 season.

Simms (undisclosed) reverted back to the Falcons' injured reserve after being waived/injured Saturday, per the official NFL media site transaction log.

Matt Simms: Waived by Falcons
Simms (undiscloed) was waived/injured by the Falcons on Saturday.
Simms was a top candidate to be Matt Ryan's backup at the beginning of the preseason, but this mystery ailment dwindled those chances when it became time to make cuts. He's expected to clear waivers and revert to injured reserve.

Falcons' Matt Simms: Receives extended look Thursday
Simms completed 10 of 20 pass attempts for 104 yards in Thursday's 23-20 preseason loss to the Dolphins.
Matt Ryan played just one series in the preseason opener, and it was Simms who got the nod over Matt Schaub and Alek Torgersen for the majority of the snaps. Simms hasn't played a down in the NFL since the 2014 season, but perhaps the coaching staff sees something in him that has him in the early running for a role on the final roster.

Falcons' Matt Simms: Signs with Atlanta
Simms signed a contract with the Falcons on Monday, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Simms has spent time with the Falcons in the past, though he's never made the regular-season active roster. He'll attempt to make it out of training camp as Matt Ryan's backup, though he'll have to beat out veteran quarterback Matt Schaub for the spot.
