Melvin informed Carolina of his retirement from football Wednesday, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
Melvin played for six different teams after going undrafted out of Northern Illinois in 2013. The 32-year-old cornerback concludes his NFL career with 260 tackles, 41 pass breakups and four interceptions over 74 games.

Melvin was elevated -- for the second time -- to the active roster ahead of Thursday's contest against the Texans, and he did enough to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. The 31-year-old will operate as a depth option while Jaycee Horn (foot) remains sidelined.
