  • Lions' Joshua Dobbs: Makes case for backup job in Detroit

Dobbs completed 15 of 19 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's 25-16 preseason win over the Colts. He also recorded minus-1 yard on five carries.

Undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer got the start at quarterback for the Lions in their final exhibition contest and played the first and third quarters as the battle to be Jared Goff's primary backup goes down to the wire, but Dobbs put up superior numbers while running the offense in the second and fourth quarters. The veteran signal-caller didn't commit a turnover and led three TD drives in total, hitting Jackson Meeks for a six-yard score and Tay Martin with a two-yard toss before halftime before handing off to Trayveon Williams for a one-yard plunge on Detroit's first possession of the fourth quarter. Whoever wins the job as the No. 2 likely won't see much action, however -- Goff hasn't missed a game due to injury since 2021.

  • Lions' Joshua Dobbs: Logs explosive run Saturday

Dobbs completed seven of his 12 passes for 74 yards and an interception while adding two carries for 53 yards and a touchdown on the ground in Saturday's 17-13 preseason win over the Commanders.

Dobbs had a rather uneventful day passing, taking an egregious 15-yard sack and throwing a pressured interception in his one quarter of play. The backup quarterback's real value came on the ground when he rushed for a 50-yard breakaway touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. While Dobbs may not have had a stellar passing outing, third-string quarterback Luke Altmyer also had a disappointing day while taking four sacks for 35 yards and throwing for only 86 total passing yards in his half of play.

  • Lions' Joshua Dobbs: Throws eight passes in Lions debut

Dobbs completed four of eight passes for 32 yards and added a nine-yard run in Thursday's 16-14 preseason loss to the Bengals.

Dobbs made his Lions debut four days after singing with the team Sunday in the wake of Teddy Bridgewater's retirement. Luke Altmyer got the start Thursday and turned the ball over three times, so the undrafted rookie seems unlikely to challenge Dobbs for the second spot on the depth chart behind Jared Goff once Dobbs familiarizes himself with Detroit's playbook. Dobbs is likely to play more extensively against the Commanders on Aug. 22 in the Lions' second preseason game.

  • Lions' Joshua Dobbs: Inks deal with Detroit

Dobbs signed a one-year, $1.425 million contract with the Lions on Sunday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

The contract includes $475,000 guaranteed and gives the Lions a veteran backup behind Jared Goff following Teddy Bridgewater's decision to retire. Luke Altmyer is the other quarterback on Detroit's 90-man roster, but the undrafted rookie will likely revert to the QB3 role now that Dobbs is in the picture. Dobbs served as Drake Maye's backup in New England last season, and the former has appeared in 27 regular-season games (15 starts) since entering the league as a fourth-round selection of the Steelers in the 2017 NFL Draft.

  • Joshua Dobbs: Being let go by New England

The Patriots intend to cut Dobbs, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.

In 2025, his lone campaign with the Patriots, Dobbs served as the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Drake Maye, who started all 17 of New England's regular-season contests. Dobbs thus was limited to 10 passing attempts and 10 carries during his four appearances in that span. In light of the looming move, Tommy DeVito now slots in as Maye's top backup, while Dobbs will look to catch on elsewhere as a veteran signal-caller option with NFL starting experience (including 12 in 2023).

  • Patriots' Joshua Dobbs: Attempts 10 passes in 2025

Dobbs appeared in four regular-season games during the 2025 campaign and completed seven of his 10 pass attempts for 65 yards and carried the ball 10 times for minus-5 yards.

Dobbs served as Drake Maye's backup but saw action only in garbage time. Dobbs has one more year remaining on his contract and will likely continue to serve as New England's No. 2 quarterback during the 2026 season.
