Jaguars' DeAndre Smelter: Returns to practice
Smelter (concussion) returned to practice Saturday, John Oehser of the Jaguars' official site reports.
Smelter sat out practice this week as well as Thursday's preseason opener as he was unable to clear the concussion protocol. The 26-year-old can ill afford to miss any additional time if he has any chance of cracking Jacksonville's 53-man roster.

Jaguars' DeAndre Smelter: Misses practice Monday
Smelter was held out of practice Monday with an undisclosed injury, Mike Kaye of FirstCoastNews.com reports.
A fourth-round pick by the 49ers in 2015, Smelter resides at the bottom of a fairly deep Jaguars receiver depth chart. The 26-year-old, who has appeared in only two NFL games, faces an uphill battle to make the 53-man roster and cannot afford to spend much time sidelined.

49ers' DeAndre Smelter: Strong start to camp
Smelter has been "coming on strong" a week into training camp, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Lower-body injuries limited the 2015 fourth-round pick in his first two seasons with the 49ers, but he appears to be healthy in camp for the first time in his career. Smelter remains fairly low on the receiver depth chart, but he could work his way up if he continues to show improvement this preseason. The 25-year-old is one of the few big-bodied wideouts (6-foot-2, 227 pounds) on the roster, which could work in his favor should one of San Francisco's starters go down to injury.

49ers' DeAndre Smelter: Lone catch goes for 23 Sunday
Smelter pulled in his only target for 23 yards in Sunday's loss to the Seahawks.
The 2015 fourth-round pick finally got his first NFL catch in Week 17 of the 2016 season. The opportunity was there for Smelter this season, but a preseason injury delayed his debut. He will still be under team control next season, so a clean bill of health could lead to opportunity on a team devoid of talent on the outside, but expectations will be low for the reclamation project.

49ers' DeAndre Smelter: Not targeted Saturday
Smelter did not receive a target in Saturday's 22-21 win over the Rams.
It was odd that the rookie wideout didn't have one ball thrown his way as he was on the field for a good number of plays Saturday. Instead, the team opted to get veterans Jeremy Kerley and Rod Streater involved in the passing game. Week 17 may be the week the team finally showcases one of their higher-upside players, but it may be too little, too late with Smelter.

49ers' DeAndre Smelter: Signs with 49ers active roster
Smelter has been promoted to the 49ers' active roster, Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group reports.
Smelter was cut before the season after suffering a hamstring injury during training camp but will now get a chance to contribute with Quinton Patton (foot) on injured reserve. Still, with the current state of San Francisco's passing game, Smelter can be avoided as a fantasy wide receiver in most standard formats.

DeAndre Smelter: Added to 49ers' practice squad
Smelter (hamstring) has been added to the 49ers' practice squad, Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports.
Smelter was cut by the team before the season after suffering a hamstring injury during training camp. Prior to being sidelined, the 2015 fourth-round pick had light breakout potential due to his size and athleticism. It is unclear if and when the 49ers will give Smelter a chance on the 53-man roster, or even if his hamstring injury has fully healed. While he is definitely not a player worth picking up right now, there is still potential for a late-season appearance where the receiver-needy team tries to get a better look at their former top receiving prospect.

DeAndre Smelter: Reaches injury settlement
Smelter, who cleared waivers Sunday and was subsequently placed on IR, reached an injury settlement with the 49ers on Monday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN reports.
The rookie was hindered by a hamstring injury throughout the preseason, and failed to impress during his time in camp. He was likely a long shot to make the team's final roster even if he was healthy, as he projected as the seventh or eighth receiver on the team's depth chart.

49ers' DeAndre Smelter: Was held out of game despite taking part in warmups
Smelter (hamstring) took part in warmups Thursday but did not play in the game, CSN Bay Area reports.
This news comes as a bit of a surprise considering Smelter's return to practice this week and his participation during pregame warmups. A setback with his injured hamstring hasn't been reported, but that is a likely reason he was held out of Thursday's preseason finale. Even with a depleted receiving corps, Smelter's stance with the 49ers remains in question due to his lack of activity this preseason. If he survives Saturday's roster cuts, then there is a chance he could work his way up the depth chart and become a fantasy relevant player at some point this season.

49ers' DeAndre Smelter: Returns to practice
Smelter (hamstring) was seen in full pads at Monday's practice, Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area reports.
Smelter -- who has missed all three preseason games with a hamstring injury -- returned to practice and could make an appearance in the 49ers' final preseason game against the Chargers on Thursday. The 2015 fourth-round pick was recovering from a torn ACL and had a great opportunity to carve out a significant role during training camp, but a hamstring injury derailed that opportunity. It isn't inconceivable for Smelter to have a strong showing in Thursday's preseason finale and rocket up the depth chart given how depleted the 49ers' receiving corps is. A more likely scenario would be Smelter making the team as a backup and earning playing time later in the season after he gets his feet wet with his first NFL action in a reserve role.

49ers' DeAndre Smelter: Will not play Friday
Smelter (hamstring) is inactive for Friday's matchup with the Packers.
Smelter was held out of the previous preseason contest as well. It's unsurprising that he's not playing, as the hamstring injury does appear to be relatively serious. Smelter currently projects to be the fifth receiver on the team's depth chart, so he's in a competition to make the final roster.
