  • Houston Bates: Released by Redskins

Bates (knee) was released by Washington with a failed physical designation on Thursday, Stephen Czarda of the Redskins' official site reports.

Bates had seven tackles in 14 games in 2016. An ACL tear prematurely ended his season last December and is likely the reason he was unable to pass his physical. He'll be able to sign with another team as soon as he returns to health. At most he'll be competing for a depth linebacker slot.

  • Redskins' Houston Bates: Opens camp on PUP list

Bates (knee) will open training camp on the Redskins' preseason Physically Unable to Perform list, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.

After tearing his ACL in December, it's unclear if Bates will be fully recovered by the time the regular season begins, so his placement on the PUP list doesn't come as much of a surprise. Since Bates is only a depth linebacker without much of a long-term investment from the Redskins, it wouldn't be surprising if he was a roster casualty if he doesn't demonstrate significant progress on the health front before camp concludes.

  • Redskins' Houston Bates: Placed on IR

Bates (knee) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Rich Tandler of CSN Mid-Atlantic reports.

Bates tore his ACL on Sunday, and the announcement that he'll be moved to IR is more of a formality. His absence leaves the Redskins with little depth at outside linebacker.

Bates tore his ACL in Sunday's game against the Panthers, Mike Jones of The Washington Post reports.

Bates exited Sunday's contest in the first quarter and it was confirmed Monday that his ACL was indeed torn. He'll assuredly be placed on injured reserve in the near future, and he'll hope to be ready to return by the start of the 2017 season.

  • Redskins' Houston Bates: Will not return Monday

Bates will not return to Monday's game against the Panthers after spraining his left knee, Mike Jones of The Washington Post reports.

Bates sustained the injury during the first quarter of the contest. While the severity of the sprain is unknown at this time, it is enough to keep him from returning. Bates primarily plays a special teams' role for the the club.
