Top Trey Sermon News

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Sparse playing time in win

Sermon had one reception for three yards on his only target and did not have a carry in Sunday's win at the Jets.

He played just five snaps on offense as Jonathan Taylor played on 63 of the offense's 70 snaps. Sermon did play more snaps than Tyler Goodson (two snaps), but it may be Goodson that has more of a role as a pass catcher if the Colts fall far behind. Either way, neither Sermon nor Goodson currently has much of a role if Taylor is fully healthy.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Plays just two snaps in loss

Sermon did not have a carry but recorded one reception for four yards in Sunday's loss to Buffalo. He played just two snaps on offense.

Sermon has fallen behind Tyler Goodson in the competition for playing time behind Jonathan Taylor. However, Goodson played just nine snaps as Taylor played on 84 percent of the offense's snaps and was on the field late in the game despite the Colts falling far behind. Both trends don't bode well for Sermon's usage when all three backs are healthy.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Limited role against Minnesota

Sermon rushed twice for four yards and caught one of two targets for nine yards in Sunday's 21-13 loss to the Vikings.

Sermon played just 14 of the Colts' 54 offensive snaps Sunday, behind starter Jonathan Taylor (39) and Tyler Goodson (1). The 25-year-old operated in a minimal role as the Colts' No. 2 running back, and he should continue to see limited opportunities as long as Taylor can stay healthy. Sermon and the Colts will host the Bills in Week 10.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Back to limited role on offense

Sermon had one reception for 14 yards and no carries in Sunday's loss at Houston.

With the return of Jonathan Taylor from an ankle injury, Sermon moved to a limited backup role. Sermon played on just 10 of the offense's 64 snaps while Taylor played on 52 snaps and Tyler Goodson played on two snaps. Sermon likely will have a minimal role while Taylor is healthy.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Takes back seat Sunday

Sermon carried the ball eight times for 36 yards and caught his only target for 13 yards in Sunday's 16-10 win over the Dolphins.

With Jonathan Taylor (ankle) still sidelined, Sermon got the start in the Colts' backfield but surprisingly played second fiddle to Tyler Goodson -- Goodson saw 14 carries and turned them into 51 yards and his first career TD. Taylor could be back in Week 8 against the Texans, but if he's not ready to go, coach Shane Steichen might decide to ride the hot hand between Sermon and Goodson again, making both backs volatile fantasy options.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Set to play Sunday

Sermon (knee) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's game against the Dolphins.

Sermon has benefited the last two contests with Jonathan Taylor (ankle) sidelined, at least in terms of touches (34 in all), but his efficiency has been lacking to the tune of 2.4 yards per carry and 4.2 yards per catch. Sermon also tended to first a collarbone injury during Week 6 prep and then a knee issue this week, but he was able to increase his activity level from none Wednesday to some Thursday before Friday's full practice. With Taylor out again Sunday, Sermon seems to be the top candidate to pace the Colts backfield, but Tyler Goodson has been far more productive during Taylor's absence, turning 20 touches into 122 yards from scrimmage. Indianapolis also has Evan Hull on the active roster and Salvon Ahmed and Trent Pennix on the practice squad, but the trio have combined for no snaps in any facet this season.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Limited at practice Thursday

Sermon (knee) returned to a limited practice Thursday.

After missing Wednesday's session, Sermon's return to the field, albeit in a limited capacity, a day later has him trending in the right direction ahead of Sunday's game against the Dolphins. If Sermon is able to practice fully Friday, he could head into the weekend without an injury designation, with his Week 7 status of particular import due to Jonathan Taylor's (ankle) continued absence from practice.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Contending with knee issue

Colts head coach Shane Steichen said Wednesday that Sermon is dealing with a knee injury ahead of Sunday's game against the Dolphins, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.

With top back Jonathan Taylor (ankle) having missed the last two games and Sermon now contending with an ankle issue, the Colts signed Salvon Ahmed to their practice squad Wednesday to bolster their depth out of the backfield. If neither Taylor nor Sermon is available to play Sunday against the Dolphins, Tyler Goodson would likely see an expanded profile out of the backfield.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Back at practice

Sermon (knee) returned to practice Thursday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.

Sermon missed Wednesday's session, but his return to the field one day later bodes well for his chances of suiting up Sunday against the Dolphins. With Jonathan Taylor (ankle) still sidelined Thursday, Sermon appears to be in a position to continue to see an expanded workload this weekend, provided his knee issue doesn't affect his Week 7 availability.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Not practicing to start week

Sermon (knee) isn't practicing Wednesday, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.

Jonathan Taylor (ankle) was also sitting out practice to begin Week 7 prep, after his absence for the previous two games allowed Sermon to make consecutive starts while handling 16 and 18 touches out of the backfield. Sermon apparently came out of Sunday's 20-17 win over the Titans with a knee injury, although he was still getting carries up until the final minute of the game. He's averaging just 2.6 yards per carry as the starter and 2.5 for the season, with his poor efficiency perhaps opening the door for Tyler Goodson to get more work if Taylor is out for another week. Goodson could be busy if both Taylor and Sermon end up missing Sunday's game against Miami.

  • Colts' Trey Sermon: Struggles for yardage Sunday

Sermon rushed 18 times for 29 yards and wasn't targeted in the Colts' 20-17 win over the Titans on Sunday.

Sermon scuffled his way to a meager 1.6 yards per carry, and 11 of his yards actually came on one of his attempts. The journeyman back was outperformed by Tyler Goodson, who rode a game-long 33-yard run on the way to an average of 6.4 yards per carry on eight attempts. Neither back figures to have much fantasy relevance if Jonathan Taylor is able to return from his ankle injury in Week 7 against the Dolphins; however, if the latter misses at least one more game, Goodson may have earned himself a larger role at Sermon's expense.
