Austin Calitro: Loses roster spot
Calitro was waived by the Giants on Thursday, Dan Benton of Giants Wire reports.
Calitro began the season as a starter, but he quickly fell down the depth chart and hasn't played since Week 6. His departure comes as the team elevated Devery Hamilton and Trenton Thompson from the practice squad ahead of Thursday's game against the Cowboys. Calitro will now likely pursue opportunities elsewhere, unless the Giants' intention is to bring him back once Hamilton and Thompson likely revert to the practice squad after Week 12.

Giants' Austin Calitro: Listed as starter on depth chart
Calitro and Tae Crowder are listed as the starting linebackers on the Giants' first unofficial depth chart, Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reports.
It's been quite an ascension for Calitro, who wasn't even signed until late July and has played only 20 NFL snaps since 2019. He impressed with three takeaways during preseason action and now has a chance to take over the starting role initially expected to be filled by Blake Martinez, who was released by New York last week.

Giants' Austin Calitro: Could take on starting role
Calitro is a candidate to take on a starting role at inside linebacker after Blake Martinez was released Thursday, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.
Calitro was a late-July addition to the squad and was initially a long shot to make the 53-man roster. However, he stood out during the preseason slate, racking up 11 solo tackles, five pressures, a recovered fumble and two interceptions (including one returned for a touchdown) over 101 snaps. Calitro has played primarily on special teams over the past two seasons between the Broncos and Bengals, but he did see a fair amount of action on defense in his first two NFL campaigns with Seattle and Jacksonville. Rookie Micah McFadden could be the more likely candidate to take over Martinez's starting role for the Giants, but even in that scenario Calitro's role should get a boost.

Calitro signed with the Giants on Thursday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.
Calitro played five games with Cincinnati last season, though he was mostly used on special teams. The linebacker did log 20 defensive snaps and collected six tackles (four solo). New York waived Justin Hilliard (ankle) in a corresponding move.
