  • Austin Calitro: Loses roster spot

Calitro was waived by the Giants on Thursday, Dan Benton of Giants Wire reports.

Calitro began the season as a starter, but he quickly fell down the depth chart and hasn't played since Week 6. His departure comes as the team elevated Devery Hamilton and Trenton Thompson from the practice squad ahead of Thursday's game against the Cowboys. Calitro will now likely pursue opportunities elsewhere, unless the Giants' intention is to bring him back once Hamilton and Thompson likely revert to the practice squad after Week 12.

  • Giants' Austin Calitro: Listed as starter on depth chart

Calitro and Tae Crowder are listed as the starting linebackers on the Giants' first unofficial depth chart, Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reports.

It's been quite an ascension for Calitro, who wasn't even signed until late July and has played only 20 NFL snaps since 2019. He impressed with three takeaways during preseason action and now has a chance to take over the starting role initially expected to be filled by Blake Martinez, who was released by New York last week.

  • Giants' Austin Calitro: Could take on starting role

Calitro is a candidate to take on a starting role at inside linebacker after Blake Martinez was released Thursday, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.

Calitro was a late-July addition to the squad and was initially a long shot to make the 53-man roster. However, he stood out during the preseason slate, racking up 11 solo tackles, five pressures, a recovered fumble and two interceptions (including one returned for a touchdown) over 101 snaps. Calitro has played primarily on special teams over the past two seasons between the Broncos and Bengals, but he did see a fair amount of action on defense in his first two NFL campaigns with Seattle and Jacksonville. Rookie Micah McFadden could be the more likely candidate to take over Martinez's starting role for the Giants, but even in that scenario Calitro's role should get a boost.

Calitro played five games with Cincinnati last season, though he was mostly used on special teams. The linebacker did log 20 defensive snaps and collected six tackles (four solo). New York waived Justin Hilliard (ankle) in a corresponding move.

  • Austin Calitro: Joins practice squad

Calitro signed with the Bengals' practice squad Monday.

Calitro was with the Bears in training camp, but he injured his hand in a preseason game and later was waived off injured reserve. He also spent time with the Broncos and Bengals in 2020, appearing in 13 games on special-teams duty, all with Denver. With Akeem Davis-Gaither (foot) placed on IR on Monday, the Bengals' linebacker unit is banged up enough for Calitro to eventually see time on the active roster.

During Calitro's 2019 campaign with Jacksonville, the inside linebacker recorded four starts while compiling 40 tackles, four tackles for loss and a forced fumble. • Broncos' Austin Calitro: Will miss at least three games

Calitro (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve Monday, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports.

Calitro won't be eligible to return until Week 7's game against the Chiefs, which is the team's last contest before its bye. The 26-year-old linebacker has operated exclusively on special teams this year, so the Broncos may fill his role via the practice squad.

  • Broncos' Austin Calitro: Heads to Mile High City

The Browns traded Calitro to the Broncos for Christian Covington, Dianna Russini of ESPN reports.

The Broncos cut inside linebacker Todd Davis on Friday, so the trade makes sense since Calitro can add solid depth. He likely won't be counted on for much defensively in 2020, but he averaged 18.2 defensive snaps per game and recorded 40 tackles over 13 contests last season.

  • Bengals' Austin Calitro: Links up with Cincy

Calitro was claimed off waivers by the Bengals on Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Calitro started four games with the Jaguars last season after starting five with the Seahawks in 2018, but he has struggled to be a consistent factor in his two-year career. The Bengals evidently valued his expertise, at one point trying to claim him off waivers last season before the Jaguars swooped in. Expect him to compete for a starting role on the team.
