Trey Edmunds: Released by Steelers
Pittsburgh released Edmunds on Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
The 27-year-old had seen just seven offensive snaps during the past two seasons combined. His absence means 2020 fourth-rounder Anthony McFarland will compete with rookie UDFAs Mataeo Durant and Jaylen Warren for a spot as the Steelers' third running-back in 2022. Meanwhile, Edmunds will look for another opportunity elsewhere.

Steelers' Trey Edmunds: First elevation of season
The Steelers elevated Edmunds from the practice squad Saturday, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
For the first time this season, Edmunds is getting a shot on the active roster. Having said that, with only Anthony McFarland (COVID-19) unavailable Sunday at Kansas City, Edmunds may find it difficult to see more than special teams snaps behind the Steelers' top three running backs -- Najee Harris, Benny Snell and Kalen Ballage.

Trey Edmunds: Signs with Steelers' practice squad
Edmunds signed with the Steelers' practice squad Wednesday, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.
Edmunds faced an uphill battle for a roster spot with Najee Harris and Kalen Ballage in the fold for the Steelers, and he was officially let go Tuesday. However, he'll remain in the organization and should be an option if the team needs an additional running back at some point in 2021.

Steelers' Trey Edmunds: Likely competing for roster spot
Edmunds will likely have to compete for a roster spot during the offseason after the Steelers selected Najee Harris with the 24th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Mark Kaboly of The Athletic reports.
Edmunds returned to Pittsburgh on a reserve/future contract in January, but the team signed Kalen Ballage before selecting the first running back off the board in the first round Thursday. Edmunds only appeared in four games for Pittsburgh last season and failed to garner any touches before a hamstring injury ended his season. Now that Harris is in line to serve as the lead back for the Steelers in 2021, Edmunds will have to make a strong case in training camp and the preseason if he hopes to secure a backup role on the Week 1 roster.

Steelers' Trey Edmunds: Moves to injured reserve
Edmunds (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve Thursday, Brooke Pryor of ESPN.com reports.
Edmunds was first reported as having a hamstring issue last Wednesday, and now he will be sidelined for at least three games given his transition to IR. Pittsburgh may have been evaluating Edmunds in recent days to determine if a shift to IR was necessary, but the team seemingly believes his injury is not short-term in nature. Edmunds has suited up for four games in 2020, with only seven combined offensive snaps to his name over those appearances.

Steelers' Trey Edmunds: Still not practicing
Edmunds (hamstring) was a non-participant at Tuesday's practice.
The 25-year-old sat out Sunday's win over the Jaguars due to the hamstring issue, and he's been sidelined for the first two practices of the week. Edmunds likely will need to practice in some capacity Wednesday to have a chance of suiting up for the Thanksgiving Day matchup with Baltimore.
