Jets' Bailey Zappe: Competing for backup role
Zappe is serving as the second-team quarterback for the Jets during OTAs, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Zappe has nine career regular-season starts, giving him more experience than fourth-round pick Cade Klubnik and second-year pro Brady Cook. With Geno Smith locked in as the team's starter, Zappe, Klubnik and Cook are competing in an "open competition" for the backup role, per Cimini.

The state of the Jets' quarterback room is in flux heading into the 2026 campaign, so Zappe looks poised to have a realistic chance at a roster spot. Zappe could serve as the backup quarterback for Cleveland in Sunday's game against Las Vegas, Zac Jackson of The Athletic reports.
Cleveland's quarterback carousel took another turn last week when then-starter Dillon Gabriel suffered a concussion and was replaced by Shedeur Sanders. The practice week begins Wednesday with Sanders expected to take reps with the first-team offense while Gabriel remains in the NFL's concussion protocol. That means Zappe could be in line for his second activation from the practice squad and become the No. 2 to Sanders.
