Bailey Zappe: Let go by Jets
The Jets cut Zappe on Saturday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Zappe signed with New York on a reserve/future contract in January and entered training camp with a legitimate shot to win the No. 2 QB job. However, he struggled during preseason play, completing just 14 of 23 passes for 135 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Zappe's departure means that either Cade Klubnik or Brady Cook will serve as Geno Smith's backup when the regular season kicks off.

Jets' Bailey Zappe: Hurts chances in job battle
Zappe, who's battling rookie Cade Klubnik for the Jets' No. 2 quarterback job, hurt his chances in Friday's preseason loss to the Buccaneers, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Klubnik got the surprise start Friday after Geno Smith was ruled out due to an ankle injury, and he turned in a solid first two drives of the game. Meanwhile, Zappe followed Klubnik and completed six of 10 passes for 55 yards, but two of his incompletions were interceptions, including one pick-six. Zappe will have two additional preseason games to make his case, but Cimini notes the veteran signal-caller appears to clearly be behind Klubnik at the moment.

Jets' Bailey Zappe: Competing for backup role
Zappe is serving as the second-team quarterback for the Jets during OTAs, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Zappe has nine career regular-season starts, giving him more experience than fourth-round pick Cade Klubnik and second-year pro Brady Cook. With Geno Smith locked in as the team's starter, Zappe, Klubnik and Cook are competing in an "open competition" for the backup role, per Cimini.

Jets' Bailey Zappe: Lands future deal with Jets
Zappe signed a reserve/future contract with the Jets on Monday.
The state of the Jets' quarterback room is in flux heading into the 2026 campaign, so Zappe looks poised to have a realistic chance at a roster spot. Zappe has 15 NFL appearances (nine starts) under his belt, with all of those having come for the Jets' AFC East rival Patriots, but he didn't appear in a regular-season game in 2025.

Bailey Zappe: Reverts to practice squad
Zappe reverted to the Browns' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Zappe stepped into the Browns' backup quarterback role behind Shedeur Sanders during Sunday's win over the Steelers due to the absence of Dillon Gabriel (shoulder). Zappe could reprise the QB2 role against the Bengals in Week 18 if Gabriel is not cleared to play.

Browns' Bailey Zappe: Elevated for Week 17
Zappe has been elevated from the practice squad Saturday in advance of Sunday's game against the Steelers.
Zappe will stand to either handle third-string QB duties versus Pittsburgh or act as the No. 2 option behind Shedeur Sanders in the event that Dillon Gabriel (shoulder), who is listed as questionable, can't play. The last time Zappe saw the field was to make a single start for Cleveland in 2024, in which he completed 16 of 31 pass attempts for 170 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
