Texans' Davis Mills: Set for QB2 duties again
Mills is expected to reprise his role as the Texans' backup quarterback behind C.J. Stroud and ahead of Graham Mertz for the 2026 season, Jared Koch of SI.com reports.
Mills has served as the Texans' QB2 for each of the past two seasons, but he started in three games during the 2025 season while Stroud was sidelined due to a concussion. Mills led the Texans to wins in all three of his starts, completing 59.5 percent of his passes for 719 yards, five touchdowns and one interception while turning seven carries into 38 yards and a score in that span. Stroud hasn't had the same kind of production over the past two years as he did in his rookie campaign in 2023, and he committed seven turnovers across Houston's two playoff games. If Stroud has a slow start to the 2026 season, then that could be enough for head coach DeMeco Ryans to turn the keys to the offense over to Mills.

Texans' Davis Mills: Goes unused in loss
Mills did not play in Sunday's 28-16 playoff loss to the Patriots.
Mills never got off the bench despite the struggles of starter C.J. Stroud, who threw four interceptions. Mills had an effective run as a starter during the regular season, guiding Houston to three straight wins when Stroud missed time due to a concussion. Mills finished the 2025 regular season with a 57.2 percent completion rate (91-for-159) for 915 yards and five touchdowns over six games. He's under contract for another season and figures to return as Stroud's backup.

Texans' Davis Mills: Likely available vs. Steelers
Mills (personal) is expected to be active as the backup to starting quarterback C.J. Stroud during Monday's wild-card matchup on the road against Pittsburgh, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Mills stayed in Houston an extra day for personal reasons, but he's now traveling to face the Steelers. While the backup quarterback is officially listed as questionable, the expectation is that Mills will be cleared in advance of Monday's 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff. Graham Mertz is also available as the No. 3 man behind Stroud and Mills.

Texans' Davis Mills: Added to report, iffy for Monday
The Texans added Mills to their injury report and list him as questionable for Monday's wild-card game against the Steelers due to a personal matter.
According to Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle, Mills wasn't part of the Texans' traveling party to Pittsburgh, but the quarterback is set to board a commercial flight and is expected to join the team in advance of its postseason opener. In the event Mills runs into travel issues that prevent him from being available Monday, the Texans would still have Graham Mertz as a third quarterback on the roster to step in as the top backup to starter C.J. Stroud.

Texans' Davis Mills: Finishes out regular-season finale
Mills completed three of nine pass attempts for 36 yards and rushed for 12 yards on one carry in Sunday's 38-30 win over the Colts in Week 18.
The playoff-bound Texans protected starter C.J. Stroud and let Mills close out the second half of the regular-season finale, once it became clear that an AFC South title wasn't in the cards. A healthy Stroud will helm Houston's playoff game next Monday at Pittsburgh. Mills, who filled in earlier this season when Stroud was hurt, finished the 2025 regular season having completing 91 of 159 attempts (57 percent) with five touchdowns and one interception.
