Gay logged three limited practice sessions this week, so his status for Sunday could truly come down to the wire. If the 26-year-old were to miss any time, second-year pro Anfernee Orji would get a chance to step into a key role, especially with D'Marco Jackson (calf) and Jaylan Ford (hamstring) already both ruled out for Week 1.

Gay did not practice Monday, so his ability to take the field Wednesday is a step in the right direction and could put him on the proper trajectory to suit up Sunday against the Panthers. The injury report also provided some clarity on the 26-year-old's injury as well, which was previously unknown.

Saints' Willie Gay: Not on the field
Gay (undisclosed) did not practice Monday, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
Gay's absence was injury-related, according to head coach Dennis Allen, although he declined to offer a diagnosis. A free-agent acquisition this offseason from Kansas City, the Mississippi State product is expected to be a starter in the Saints' linebacker corps, which is currently dealing with several injuries. A clearer picture of his status for Sunday against the Panthers will come later in the week when the team releases its initial injury report.

Saints' Willie Gay: Heading to New Orleans
The Saints agreed to terms with Gay on a one-year deal worth up to $5 million Tuesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
A two-time Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs, Gay started 47 games across four seasons with Kansas City and is coming off a 2023 in which he recorded 58 tackles (44 solo), including one sack, along with three fumble recoveries and one interception across 15 starts. He'll team up with veteran Demario Davis and 2021 second-rounder Pete Werner at linebacker for the Saints.

Chiefs' Willie Gay: Listed as full participant
Gay (neck) was listed as a full participant on Thursday's estimated practice report after being listed as a limited participant on Wednesday's report.
The starting outside linebacker missed the Chiefs' AFC Championship Game win over the Ravens with the same injury. Gay's status Friday will be worth monitoring as Kansas City prepares for its Feb. 11 Super Bowl matchup with San Francisco. The fourth-year pro also dealt with the injury during the Chiefs' divisional-round win over the Bills, and he only played on 14 percent of the defensive snaps in that game, a season low.

Chiefs' Willie Gay: Still battling neck injury
Gay (neck) was listed as a limited participant on Wednesday's estimated practice report.
Gay sat out Sunday's win over the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game and will spend the next two weeks working to move past the injury in advance of the Super Bowl matchup with the 49ers on Feb. 11. He'll likely need to put in a full practice at some point this week or next for the Chiefs to feel confident in his availability for the Super Bowl.
