Cowboys' Jaydon Blue: Stands out with extended playing time
Blue (shoulder) rushed 15 times for 75 yards in the Cowboys' 34-13 preseason win over the Cardinals on Saturday. He also returned one kickoff for 26 yards.
Blue shook off the shoulder issue that had led to a pair of absences and limited participation in the last three practices prior to Saturday's game, leading the Cowboys in rush attempts and rushing yards on the night. Blue has seen 25 total touches over the first two preseason games as head coach Brian Schottenheimer gives the second-year back a long look in the competition for the No. 2 running back role. While Blue's performance Saturday was certainly impressive, fellow backs Malik Davis and Phil Mafah also had some standout plays, and the competition therefore may remain unsettled until the conclusion of Friday's home preseason finale against the Saints.

Cowboys' Jaydon Blue: Upgrades to limited participation Thursday
Blue (shoulder) will be limited in practice Thursday, per head coach Brian Schottenheimer, Tommy Yarrish of the Cowboys' official site reports.
Blue was a non-participant earlier in the week, so Thursday's limited participation marks a step in the right direction. The 2025 fifth-round pick is battling fellow 2025 Day 3 draft pick Phil Mafah (chest) and Malik Davis for depth-chart positioning behind Javonte Williams. The Cowboys had been planning to give Blue a heavy workload throughout the preseason, but it's unclear if he'll be healthy enough to suit up for Saturday's preseason game against the Cardinals.

Cowboys' Jaydon Blue: Misses practice with shoulder injury
Blue missed Tuesday's joint practice with the Saints due to a shoulder injury, Patrik Walker of the Cowboys' official site reports.
Blue handled 10 touches in the Cowboys's preseason opener last weekend, amassing 34 yards. He's expected to get plenty of run this preseason in his battle for the RB2 job behind Javonte Williams, but if Blue is unable to play through a shoulder issue this coming Saturday against the Cardinals, Malik Davis and Phil Mafah (chest) would likely get additional chances to state their case for the job.

Cowboys' Jaydon Blue: Logs 10 touches in preseason win
Blue rushed eight times for 19 yards and brought in both targets for 15 yards in the Cowboys' 17-7 preseason win over the Seahawks on Saturday. He also returned one kickoff for 23 yards.
Blue was the Cowboys' starting running back Saturday and gained six yards on two rush attempts over Dallas' first pair of plays from scrimmage. The 2025 fifth-round pick has been praised for having a much better training camp this summer than he did as a rookie, and as Saturday's game demonstrated, the coaching staff is set to give him an extended look during preseason to determine his fitness for a potential No. 2 role. One of Blue's primary competitors for the job, Phil Mafah, notably suffered a chest injury during Saturday's game, but head coach Brian Schottenheimer said he doesn't expect him to miss significant time.

Cowboys' Jaydon Blue: Will get ample work in preseason
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Thursday that Blue and Phil Mafah will both "get a ton of work" during the preseason, Patrik Walker of the Cowboys' official site reports.
Blue and Mafah are "in a heated battle" for the top backup spot behind Javonte Williams, per Schottenheimer. Dallas' initial depth chart lists Blue second behind Williams, ahead of Mafah and Malik Davis. Blue was a fifth-round pick of the Cowboys in 2025, going two rounds ahead of Mafah. The Cowboys will kick off preseason play Saturday in Seattle.

Cowboys' Jaydon Blue: Listed second behind Williams on unofficial depth chart
Blue is listed as the No. 2 RB behind Javonte Williams on the Cowboys' unofficial depth chart ahead of the team's preseason opener, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Per Watkins, both Blue and Phil Mafah -- who is listed third by the team -- have looked good at training camp thus far, while Malik Davis slots in behind the aforementioned top three. While noting the unofficial nature of the team's current backfield listing, Blue is still a player to monitor on the fantasy radar should he indeed head into the regular season as Williams' top understudy.

Cowboys' Jaydon Blue: Showing improvement in Year 2
Coach Brian Schottenheimer notes that the difference has been "night and day" in terms of Blue's performance during this year's offseason program, Todd Archer of ESPN reports.
Blue, who the Cowboys took in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, logged just 38 carries for 129 yards and a TD and one catch for five yards in five regular-season games as a rookie. While Malik Davis emerged as Javonte Williams' primary backup last year, Blue will have a chance to compete for that role this summer with Davis, as well as Phil Mafah. Williams remains the team's unquestioned lead back, but if Blue can parlay the speed and explosiveness Schottenheimer has noted he possesses into a larger complementary role, the Texas product could carry fantasy sleeper appeal in 2026.

Cowboys' Jaydon Blue: In mix for backfield role
Blue is competing with Malik Davis and Phil Mafah for No. 2 running back reps behind starter Javonte Williams at OTAs, Todd Archer of ESPN reports.
Blue, a 2025 fifth-round pick, was a healthy scratch for 12 games as a rookie and only tallied 38 carries for 129 yards and one score across the five regular-season appearances he did log. Among those games was Dallas' regular-season finale against the Giants in Week 18, however, in which Blue stepped into the No. 1 role with both Williams and Davis sidelined, totaling 16 carries for 64 yards and his sole career score. Blue is undersized at 5-foot-9, 196 pounds, but he boasts 4.38-second 40 speed and could carve out a change-of-pace role behind Williams with a strong offseason.
