  • Codey McElroy: Moves to waivers

The Buccaneers waived McElroy (foot) with an injury designation Tuesday, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.

With McElroy -- who spent the majority of the past two-and-a-half seasons on the team's practice squad -- having been waived, Cameron Brate, Kyle Rudolph, Cade Otton and Ko Kieft profile as Tampa Bay's top tight end options. McElroy is also set to undergo foot surgery this week, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports, so he'll have bounce back from that before getting a chance to resurface.

  • Buccaneers' Codey McElroy: Elevated from practice squad

The Buccaneers elevated McElroy from their practice squad Saturday, Carmen Vitali of the Buccaneers' official site reports.

  • Codey McElroy: Reverts back to practice squad

McElroy reverted back to the Buccaneers' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.

  • Buccaneers' Codey McElroy: Elevated from practice squad

McElroy was brought up from the practice squad Saturday for the Buccaneers' Week 5 matchup versus the Dolphins.

The tight end will provide the team with a third healthy option at the position with Rob Gronkowski (ribs) still out this weekend. McElroy played four snaps in Week 4 while failing to reel in his only target.

  • Codey McElroy: Heads back to practice squad

McElroy reverted to Tampa Bay's practice squad Monday, per the NFL's official transactions report.

McElroy was elevated to the active roster for Sunday's win over the Patriots, so it's automatic for him to revert to the practice squad. He didn't record any official stats while playing eight total snaps, four each on offense and special teams.

  • Buccaneers' Codey McElroy: Promoted to active roster

The Buccaneers elevated McElroy to their active roster from their practice squad Saturday.

McElroy was waived by the Buccaneers before the 53-man roster deadline, but he latched onto their practice squad after clearing waivers. He will likely serve as a depth behind Cameron Brate and O.J. Howard while Rob Gronkowski (ribs) is sidelined for Week 4.

  • Codey McElroy: Waived by Tampa Bay

The Bucs waived McElroy on Tuesday, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.

McElroy was inconsistent during the Bucs' final preseason contest Saturday. He showed off his athleticism on a 20-yard touchdown catch, but he also missed his assignment on special teams that led to a blocked field-goal attempt. Tampa Bay has elected to keep just three tight ends -- Cameron Brate, O.J. Howard and Rob Gronkowski -- on their 53-man roster. McElroy will likely end up on the Bucs' practice squad if he clears waivers.

  • Buccaneers' Codey McElroy: Mixed reviews in preseason finale

McElroy secured both his targets for 32 yards and a touchdown in Saturday night's 23-16 preseason win over the Texans, but his missed assignment on a Jose Borregales field-goal attempt led to a blocked kick, Joey Knight of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

McElroy's 20-yard scoring connection with rookie quarterback Kyle Trask in the latter portion of the third quarter showed off the young tight end's athleticism and hands, but the special-teams gaffe is precisely the type of mistake a bubble player wants to steer clear of. Head coach Bruce Arians didn't mince words when commenting on the miscue, calling McElroy's miss "a total whiff" and noting "it didn't help his cause." The Buccaneers aren't even guaranteed to keep four tight ends when they make final roster cuts by Tuesday's deadline, and for what it's worth, Greg Auman of The Athletic projects Tampa Bay to keep neither Tanner Hudson nor McElroy on the 53-man roster to open the season.

  • Buccaneers' Codey McElroy: Has shot at roster spot

McElroy heads into Saturday night's preseason game against the Texans with a legitimate chance to unseat Tanner Hudson for a possible No. 4 tight end spot, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.

The athletic McElroy has made an impression on head coach Bruce Arians in a very important category, that being his blocking. Arians noted "he's gotten better and better" with respect to McElroy's progress in that area, while Hudson, who's paced the Buccaneers in receptions in each of the first two exhibitions, continues to struggle with that aspect of his game. There's still no guarantee Tampa Bay will keep four tight ends, but that decision will likely largely be based on the performance of each player versus Houston.

  • Buccaneers' Codey McElroy: Flashing in early practices

McElroy, who is battling for a reserve tight end role, has stood out with his sure hands during the first few days of training camp, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.

The athletic McElroy is an intriguing prospect, considering he played two seasons of minor-league baseball and some college basketball before devoting himself to football on a full-time basis. The 6-foot-6, 255-pound Oklahoma State product is already 28 years old and counts a 30-yard grab back in 2019 as his only career NFL reception, but the Buccaneers thought enough of his potential to ink him to a reserve/futures contract in February following a 2020 season on the practice squad. McElroy is competing with fellow incumbent Tanner Hudson and journeyman Jerell Adams for a roster spot, and preseason games could ultimately be the deciding factor on who wins the job battle.

  • Buccaneers' Codey McElroy: Signs futures deal

McElroy signed a reserve/future contract with the Buccaneers on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.

The 28-year-old appeared in one game for Tampa Bay in 2019 and spent most of the 2020 campaign on the practice squad. McElroy will face long odds to make the season-opening roster next season, assuming he sticks around until training camp.

  • Codey McElroy: Signs with Bucs' practice squad

McElroy signed to Tampa Bay's practice squad Monday, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports.

The 27-year-old made his NFL debut with the Buccaneers last year and had a 30-yard reception in his lone appearance, but he was waived at roster cutdowns in September. McElroy provides potential depth at tight end with O.J. Howard (Achilles) on injured reserve.

  • Codey McElroy: Shifts to waivers

The Buccaneers waived McElroy on Friday, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

McElroy made his NFL debut at 27 years old last season, and he hauled in a 30-yard pass. However, with Rob Gronkowski, O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate on the roster, McElroy was a longshot to make it past cut day.

  • Buccaneers' Codey McElroy: Sitting out regular-season finale

McElroy (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's Week 17 tilt against the Falcons, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.

The rookie tight end made an impact on his one play in Week 16, corralling a 30-yard reception. However, with both O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate healthy for the finale and Tanner Hudson (concussion) returning to back them up, there was no room or need for McElroy in the finale.

  • Buccaneers' Codey McElroy: Big catch in Week 16 loss

McElroy secured his only target for 30 yards in the Buccaneers' 23-20 loss to the Texans on Saturday.

The undrafted rookie made his one catch count, recording the longest gain of the day through the air for the Buccaneers. McElroy is part of an all-hands-on-deck approach for Tampa's pass-catching corps necessitated by multiple injuries at the tail end of the season, and he should therefore have an opportunity to showcase his skills working behind starters O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate in Week 17 versus the Falcons.
