Steelers' Lew Nichols: Signs future deal
The Steelers signed Nichols to a reserve/future contract Wednesday, Teresa Varley of the team's official site reports.
Nichols stuck with the Steelers' practice squad for the entire 2025 season and was elevated once for the Week 9 win over the Colts. The running back played 21 percent of special-teams snaps in the victory, getting his foot in the door as he looks to compete for a spot on the 2026 roster.

Nichols reverted to Pittsburgh's practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
Nichols received his first elevation of the campaign ahead of Sunday's win over Indianapolis and recorded six snaps on special teams, making one tackle on kick coverage. That marked his first regular-season NFL action after being drafted by Green Bay in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

The 2023 seventh-rounder caught on with the Steelers in late July after being let go by the Eagles. He finished the preseason with 11 carries for 87 yards and five catches (on eight targets) for 36 yards. Nichols' efforts weren't enough to crack the 53-man roster, and he'll have the opportunity to sign with a team in need of backfield depth if he clears waivers.

Nichols' addition to the Eagles' practice squad provides depth at running back due to Kenneth Gainwell being in concussion protocol while also working through a knee injury. Nichols signed a reserve/future contract with the Eagles in January, and he compiled 22 receiving yards on six catches while adding 30 rushing yards on 15 carries and 59 yards on three kickoff returns during the preseason.
