Head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Monday that Bell's hip surgery is season-ending, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Bell was carted off the field with a right hip injury in the third quarter of Cleveland's Week 2 win, and it now appears the 23-year-old wideout will be forced to miss the remainder of the 2024 season. With Bell undergoing season-ending surgery, expect Cedric Tillman and James Proche to see more work as depth pieces in the Browns' wide receiver room.

Bell won't return to Sunday's game at Jacksonville due to a right hip injury.
Bell was carted from the field early in the third quarter with his right leg elevated by a member of the Browns' training staff per Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.com. Prior to his exit, Bell had hauled in all three targets for 27 yards. With Bell sidelined for the rest of Week 2, the Browns' receiving corps has been whittled down to Amari Cooper, Jerry Jeudy, Elijah Moore, Cedric Tillman and James Proche.

Browns' David Bell: Signed to active roster
The Browns signed Bell from the practice squad to the active roster Wednesday, Zac Jackson of The Athletic reports.
Bell was waived by the Browns this past Thursday before joining the team's practice squad two days later. The 2022 third-round pick is back on the 53-man roster after Cleveland placed four players on injured reserve Wednesday. Bell appeared in 15 regular-season games for the Browns in 2023 and registered 14 catches (on 23 targets) for 167 yards and three touchdowns.

David Bell: Signs with Cleveland practice squad
Bell signed with the Browns' practice squad Saturday, Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.come reports.
The 2022 third-round pick was waived by the team earlier this week, but it always seemed like this was a roster manipulation move as opposed to Bell falling out favor with the franchise. It's entirely possible Bell will be elevated to the active roster frequently to begin the year, but he at minimum won't be eligible to play until Week 2.

The Browns waived Bell on Thursday, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Bell, a 2022 third-round pick, failed to emerge as a regular starter in his first two seasons with Cleveland, but Cabot reports that the team hopes a reunion will be possible if he goes unclaimed on waivers. In Wednesday's practice Bell was limited with a quadriceps issue, but it looks like he's now healthy and wasn't waived with an injury designation.

Bell was unable to practice earlier in the week, so he's making progress in his recovery from a quadriceps injury that has sidelined the wide receiver since Aug. 10. It remains to be seen if Bell will be healthy enough to suit up for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Cowboys, and he'll likely play sparingly if given the green light.

Bell has been out of action since suffering the injury Aug. 10 against the Packers. The third-year pro was expected to return to practice this week, but for now, he'll be considered questionable for Cleveland's Week 1 matchup with the Cowboys on Sunday. Currently slotted in as the team's No. 5 wideout on the positional depth chart, his potential absence likely won't have much of an impact on the offense but would probably allow rookie Jamari Thrash to see a few snaps.

Bell hasn't practiced since suffering a quad injury during Cleveland's preseason opener against the Packers on Aug. 10, but he's in line to get back on the field this week. That will leave the depth wideout roughly two weeks to ramp up his activity level prior to the Browns' regular-season opener against Dallas on Sept. 8.

Browns' David Bell: Set to miss time with quad injury
Head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Monday that Bell "took a good shot" to his quadriceps in Saturday's preseason loss to the Packers, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
Stefanski added that he expects Bell to be held out of team drills for the next week or two while nursing his injury. Bell caught his lone target for five yards before exiting in the first half of Saturday's contest. Browns' David Bell: Battling for roster
Bell is in the mix for a roster spot with two wideouts drafted the last two years, Patrick Warren of the Browns' official site reports.
Bell left a positive image in the mind of head coach Kevin Stefanski with a diving touchdown catch to end Friday's practice, the Browns' final session at The Greenbriar in West Virginia before heading back to Ohio to finish out training camp. "He has done a nice job, including that last play there," Stefanski said. "That's a really, really impressive catch to end that drill. He's a guy that has proven to be very, very dependable for our football team." Bell's experience on special teams may be valuable to him winning a roster spot. He's competing with Cedric Tillman (third round, 2023) and Jamari Thrash (fifth round, 2024) to fill out the position. The Browns carried six wideouts on their initial 53-man roster last year, so all three could have a home in 2024.

Browns' David Bell: Finishes strong
Bell caught 14 of 23 targets for 167 yards and three touchdowns over 15 regular-season games in 2023.
Bell was largely a non-factor during the regular season with the majority of his output coming in the final game when the Browns rested starters for the postseason. He followed that with eight catches in the playoff loss to Houston. The Browns clearly need help at wide receiver behind Amari Cooper in 2024. Elijah Moore, who was expected to provide big-play potential, never emerged as a threat and enters the final year of his rookie contract. That suggests Bell or second-year wideout Cedric Tillman could move up the depth chart and hold bigger roles.
