  • Packers' Lukas Van Ness: Fifth-year option picked up

Van Ness had his fifth-year option exercised by the Packers on Thursday, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports.

The move keeps the 24-year-old under contract through 2027 and guarantees him a salary near $13.8 million. The three-year pro missed half of last season with an ankle injury, which caused him to finish with a disappointing 1.5 sacks and 19 tackles (12 solo) over nine regular-season games. The 2024 season wasn't much better as he recorded 33 tackles (22 solo) and six tackles for loss in 17 regular-season games, but he at least combined for 7.0 sacks over his first two seasons. Green Bay's switch to a 3-4 defensive scheme could impact Van Ness's playing time, but with Micah Parsons still rehabbing back from a December ACL tear and pass-rush depth lost this season in the form of Rashan Gary and Kingsley Enagbare, the new scheme won't be a reason that Van Ness, a 2023 first-round pick, would be kept off the field.

  • Packers' Lukas Van Ness: Disappointing third year

Van Ness recorded 19 tackles (12 solo) including 1.5 sacks, in nine regular-season games with Green Bay in 2025.

Van Ness also had a strip-sack in the wild-card round at Chicago. He was hit with the injury bug for the first time in his pro career in 2025, limiting him to just nine games after he didn't miss a game in either of his first two campaigns. Perhaps more concerning though, he was less productive as a pass rusher on a per-snap basis than in his first or second year. He's done little to show he is truly competing for snaps with three-time All Pro Micah Parsons (knee) or Rashan Gary, and his role in the final year of his rookie contract in 2026 will largely depend on the timeline for Parsons' recovery from the ACL tear he suffered in Week 15 at Denver.

  • Packers' Lukas Van Ness: Available against Minnesota

Van Ness (illness/foot) does not carry an injury designation into Sunday's game against the Vikings, Wes Hodkiewicz of the Packers' official site reports.

Van Ness managed to fade an injury tag for Week 18 despite being limited in practice all week by a foot injury and illness. However, the Packers are locked in as the NFC's seventh seed, so he could operate on a snap count or be held out of Sunday's regular-season finale entirely. If Van Ness's snaps are limited, then Arron Mosby, Brenton Cox and Barryn Sorrell would be in line for more snaps on defense.

  • Packers' Lukas Van Ness: Limited in practice Wednesday

Van Ness (illness/foot) was a limited practice participant Wednesday.

It's a good sign for Van Ness' chance of playing Sunday versus Minnesota that he was able to log a limited practice Wednesday, but it should also be noted that the Packers plan to rest at least some of their starters Week 18 with the team locked into the No. 7 playoff seed in the NFC. The third-year defensive lineman has been dealing with a nagging foot injury since mid-October, and Green Bay may elect to give him a lesser workload (if any) with the postseason on the horizon.

  • Packers' Lukas Van Ness: Ready for Saturday

Van Ness (foot) doesn't have an injury designation ahead of Saturday's game against the Bears, Wes Hodkiewicz of the Packers' official site reports.

Van Ness upgraded his practice participation twice this week, allowing him to shed his injury designation before Saturday's divisional contest. The defensive end is all set to see an increased workload in Saturday's game due to the season-ending ACL tear that Micah Parsons suffered against the Broncos in Week 15.

  • Packers' Lukas Van Ness: Upgrades to limited practice

Van Ness (foot) was a limited participant in Wednesday's practice.

Van Ness was listed as a non-participant at Tuesday's walkthrough practice, so it's encouraging to see him back on the field in at least a limited capacity. He managed to play through his lingering foot injury during Green Bay's loss to Denver in Week 15, recording two solo tackles while playing 21 percent of defensive snaps. With Micah Parsons (ACL) having suffered a season-ending injury versus the Broncos, Van Ness is now positioned for an increased role on defense as long as he can gain clearance for Saturday's matchup against the Bears.

  • Packers' Lukas Van Ness: Good to go Week 15

Van Ness (foot) is active for Sunday's game against the Broncos, Mike Spofford of the Packers' official site reports.

Van Ness has been cleared to play Sunday after working through a foot injury over the Packers' last eight games. His return bolster's the Packers' depth on the defensive line behind Rashan Gary and Micah Parsons.

  • Packers' Lukas Van Ness: Chance to play vs. Denver

Van Ness (foot) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Broncos, Wes Hodkiewicz of the Packers' official site reports.

Van Ness has missed seven of the Packers' last eight games due to a foot injury, but he has a chance to return Sunday after logging a full week of limited practices. If he's given the green light to return, he would operate in a rotational role at defensive end behind starters Rashan Gary and Micah Parsons.
