From NFL Draft To Playoffs: Dallas Cowboys

Top Darren McFadden News

  • Darren McFadden: Announces retirement

McFadden announced Tuesday that he is retiring from the NFL.

This decision comes just two days after McFadden and the Cowboys agreed to mutually part ways, as the tailback officially decides to end a career that was slowed by injuries. McFadden finishes his professional career with 5,421 yards rushing and 28 touchdowns, but he only managed to play 103 games across 10 NFL seasons.

  • Darren McFadden: Parting ways with Dallas

The Cowboys will waive McFadden after the two sides mutually agreed to part ways, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports.

McFadden has been stuck at fourth on the depth chart at running back all season, and even with starter Ezekiel Elliott (suspension) missing the Cowboys' last three contests, head coach Jason Garrett hasn't elected to keep McFadden active for the past two games. With an opportunity to play meaningful snaps unlikely to come McFadden's way barring an injury to either Alfred Morris or Rod Smith, the Cowboys elected to cut the veteran and allow him to pursue his options elsewhere.

  • Cowboys' Darren McFadden: Not active Thursday

McFadden (coach's decision) is inactive for Thursday's game versus the Chargers, David Helman of the Cowboys' official site reports.

As the Cowboys enter a third game without the suspended Ezekiel Elliott, McFadden will remain in street clothes for the second game in a row. Without an injury to Alfred Morris or Rod Smith, McFadden is unlikely to make an appearance before Elliott returns in Week 16.

  • Cowboys' Darren McFadden: Inactive for SNF

McFadden is inactive for Sunday's game against the Eagles, David Helman of the Cowboys' official site reports.

After playing just one snap in the first game during Ezekiel Elliott's six-week suspension, McFadden finds himself relegated to the inactive list, where he's resided for most of the season. The Cowboys would turn to fullback Keith Smith as an emergency backup tailback if Alfred Morris or Rod Smith were to suffer an injury.

  • Cowboys' Darren McFadden: Barely used Sunday

McFadden carried the ball once for minus-2 yards in Sunday's loss to the Falcons.

With Ezekiel Elliott (suspension) unavailable, McFadden was the clear No. 3 in the Cowboys backfield behind Alfred Morris and Rod Smith, although his limited usage may have been partially due to the team's need for extra pass protection with left tackle Tyron Smith (groin) also out of action. McFadden may see a few more touches next week against the Eagles, but it's unlikely he'll suddenly become a major part of the Dallas offense.
