  • Capitals' T.J. Oshie: Won't play in 2024-25

Oshie will be put on long-term injured reserve due to a chronic back injury that's expected to cost him the entire 2024-25 campaign, per Tom Gulitti of NHL.com on Wednesday. Oshie had 12 goals and 25 points in 52 regular-season games with Washington in 2023-24. While the possibility of him someday returning to the NHL hasn't been ruled out, Oshie will turn 38 on Dec. 23 and is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2025. If he has played in his final game, then he'll be hanging up his skates after scoring 302 goals and 695 points across 1,010 career regular-season contests. He also won the Stanley Cup with Washington in 2018 and played a vital role in that playoff run, supplying eight goals and 21 points in 24 outings.

The 37-year-old Oshie has once again had trouble staying on the ice in 2023-24, playing only 48 games -- the fourth straight season he'll end up playing less than 60 -- and managing just 11 goals and 23 points.

Oshie (upper body) is expected to be in the lineup for Tuesday's tilt versus the Red Wings, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports. Oshie missed the last four games with the injury, which appears to be a nagging issue. He has also endured absences of seven and two contests since late February while playing nine times in between. • Capitals' T.J. Oshie: Traveling with team

Oshie (upper body) will travel for the Capitals' two-game road trip, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports Monday. Oshie is far from a lock to get into the lineup but seems to be trending in the right direction ahead of Tuesday's clash with the Red Wings. Injuries have impacted the winger's recent availability, as he's missed 13 of the last 22 contests, which no doubt has factored into him scoring just once in his nine appearances in that span. Still, if Oshie is given the all-clear, he should be in the mix for a top-six role, likely replacing Michael Sgarbossa for a second-line spot.

Oshie scored a power-play goal and added two PIM in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Kraken. Oshie's goal was less a product of his own work and more a result of good fortune, as Joey Daccord's clearing attempt bounced off the forward and in for the opening goal. This was Oshie's third game back from an upper-body injury that kept him out of the lineup for seven contests. He's up to 11 tallies, 19 points, 78 shots on net, 63 hits, 40 blocked shots, 42 PIM and a minus-10 rating through 41 appearances. The Capitals have used a multitude of line combinations, but Oshie should be good for top-six minutes and power-play time as long as he can stay healthy.
