Avalanche's Brock Nelson: Lights lamp twice Thursday
Nelson scored two goals, one on the power play and the other the game-winner, in Thursday's 5-1 victory over the Senators.
The goals were his first in seven appearances since being acquired by the Avalanche at the trade deadline. The power-play tally was only Nelson's second of the season -- his other came back on Nov. 23 -- but the former Islander is up to seven game-winning goals on the campaign, one short of the career-high eight he produced in 2022-23. The veteran center is three goals shy of 25, and three points away from recording 50 -- marks he's reached in each of the prior five full seasons.

Avalanche's Brock Nelson: Assist in first game with new team
Nelson picked up an assist in a 7-4 Colorado win over Toronto on Saturday.
Nelson hit the post in the first minute of his Colorado debut. He got a primary assist on Valeri Nichushkin's second goal of the first period. Nelson looked almost immediately comfortable with his new team and linemates. The pivot has points in seven of his last eight games (four goals, seven assists), and he's skating with perhaps the best players of his career. Nelson's fantasy value is about to take a big jump.

Avalanche's Brock Nelson: Traded to Colorado
Nelson and William Dufour were traded to the Avalanche from the Islanders on Thursday in exchange for Oliver Kylington, Calum Ritchie, a conditional first-round pick and a conditional 2028 third-round pick.
Nelson's tenure with the Islanders, the only team he's known in the NHL since he was drafted 30th overall in 2010, is over. He reached the 20-goal mark nine times in 12 seasons with the club, including this year after scoring in his last game as an Islander on Tuesday versus the Jets. He'll now join a true contender and slot in as the second-line center behind Nathan MacKinnon as the Avalanche look to climb the mountain again. Nelson was one of the top forwards on the market, and while he may end up being a rental for the Avalanche, he's an immediate upgrade over Casey Mittelstadt, who could slip down the lineup, move to the wing or both to accommodate this move.

Nelson recorded an even-strength goal and a power-play assist in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Jets.

Islanders' Brock Nelson: Picks up helper
Nelson logged an assist and three shots on goal in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Stars.
Nelson has four points and 16 shots on net over his last four contests. The 33-year-old has been excellent in a second-line role this season, giving the Islanders some stability on offense. He's up to 36 points, 150 shots on net and a plus-2 rating through 56 appearances. That production doesn't play in all fantasy formats, especially with a lack of physicality, but Nelson's consistency can add some appeal.

Islanders' Brock Nelson: Goal, assist in home state
Nelson produced a goal on a team-high eight shots, an assist, one hit, one blocked shot and a minus-1 rating in Saturday's 6-3 loss to Minnesota.
Nelson logged the primary assist on Kyle Palmieri's 16th goal of 2024-25 before he gave New York a 2-1 lead in the opening 28 seconds of the middle frame. Nelson has been subject to trade speculation due to his pending unrestricted free agent status, but New York has crept into the playoff race recently, so General Manager Lou Lamoriello may have to be blown away with an offer in order to concede a top-six center. Nelson is at 17 goals and 35 points through 55 appearances this season. The 33-year-old won't have any time off during the break -- he'll don the Team USA sweater at the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.

Islanders' Brock Nelson: Nets fourth winner of season
Nelson scored the game-winning goal Tuesday in a 2-1 victory over Vegas.
It was his fourth game winner of the season. Nelson redirected an Alexander Romanov point shot over Ilya Samsonov's glove from deep in the left face-off circle midway through the third period for Nelson's 15th goal and 32nd point of the season (52 games). Nelson's pace is well below his brilliance of the last three seasons (107 goals, 96 assists in 236 games). With his pedigree and an expiring contract, Nelson remains a strong trade target for many contenders, but the Islanders may opt to keep him for a playoff push after moving within three points of a playoff spot with eight wins in their last nine games.

Islanders' Brock Nelson: Two points in victory
Nelson netted a goal on four shots, logged an assist and went plus-2 in Saturday's 4-1 over San Jose.
This was Nelson's third multi-point effort in his last five games, as he's notched three goals, four helpers and a plus-5 rating over that stretch. The left-shot center scored his 13th goal of the campaign in the middle frame before adding an assist on Ryan Pulock's third tally of the season early in the third. Nelson has been subject to trade speculation as a result of the Islanders' struggles this season, and he could be a solid addition for a contending team -- the 33-year-old potted at least 34 goals in each of the previous three campaigns. Nelson's well short of that pace with 13 goals and 28 points through 45 appearances in 2024-25.

Nelson is up to 12 goals, 24 points, 105 shots on net and a plus-1 rating over 42 appearances this season. Islanders' Brock Nelson: Ends lengthy goal drought
Nelson scored a goal, dished an assist, blocked two shots and went plus-2 in Thursday's 4-0 win over the Golden Knights.
Nelson had been limited to four assists during a 17-game goal drought. He picked up a helper on an Anders Lee goal in the first period before putting his slump to rest with a second-period tally of his own. Despite his recent struggles, Nelson has actually moved up in the lineup to the top line between Lee and Mathew Barzal. For the season, Nelson is at 11 goals, 23 points, 101 shots on net and a minus-1 rating over 41 appearances. A large part of his struggles can be blamed on the Islanders' abysmal power-play performance -- they're converting at just 10.9 percent this season, and Nelson has just one power-play point after registering at least 14 in each of the last three campaigns.

Islanders' Brock Nelson: Contributes assist Saturday
Nelson notched an assist and two PIM in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Penguins.
Nelson has four assists over his last seven games, but he had no points over the six contests prior to that. He's still struggling to score, and that's not helped by the fact he's gone nine games and counting without putting multiple shots on net. The 33-year-old center is at 21 points, 92 shots on net and a minus-3 rating through 36 appearances. Those season-long numbers suggest he'll turn things around and get back to being a volume shooter, which should in turn help his offense.

Islanders' Brock Nelson: Gone quiet
Nelson has been quiet offensively, registering just three assists across his past 12 games dating back to Nov. 29.
Nelson has 10 goals and 20 points through 35 appearances in 2024-25, which would translate to roughly 47 points by the end of the regular season if he maintained that pace. That's well below his 2023-24 finish of 34 markers and 69 points in 82 regular-season outings, and it'd also be just the second time Nelson has failed to hit the 50-point mark across the past seven years (the only other time he missed in that stretch was the shortened 2020-21 campaign). Nelson has also managed only six shots over his past eight games -- well below his average of 2.7 shots per game dating back to the start of 2021-22 -- which highlights just how quiet he's been recently.

Islanders' Brock Nelson: Notches apple in loss
Nelson produced an even-strength assist in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Blackhawks.
Nelson picked up the primary assist on Noah Dobson's fourth goal of the season early in the third period. Nelson has dished an assist in three consecutive games, but he's mired in a nine-game goal drought. The left-shot center has struggled on the man advantage as well -- he has just one power-play goal this season after potting nine in 2023-24. Nelson is up 10 goals and 20 points while averaging 19:18 of ice time through 32 games. He'll look to extend his point streak to four games Tuesday against the Hurricanes.

Islanders' Brock Nelson: Picks up assist in loss
Nelson logged an assist in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Kings.
Nelson snapped a six-game slump with the helper. Prior to that dry spell, he had seven points over three contests. Consistency is a concern, especially when playing in a low-scoring offense, and it's not great that he has just four shots on net over his last four games. For the season, the 33-year-old center is at 18 points, 87 shots on net and a minus-2 rating over 30 appearances.
