  • Andreas Johnsson: Headed for Sweden

Johnsson agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Skelleftea AIK (Sweden) on Thursday, Chris Johnston of The Athletic reports.

Johnsson was released from his contract with the Penguins in order to allow him to complete a move abroad. Selected by the Maple Leafs in the seventh round of the 2013 NHL Draft, the 28-year-old winger saw action in 259 NHL games with Toronto and New Jersey in which he garnered 48 goals and 68 assists. With this move, Johnsson has likely closed the door on returning to the NHL in the future.

  • Penguins' Andreas Johnsson: Active to start camp

Johnsson (lower body) skated on a line with Reilly Smith and Evgeni Malkin at Thursday's practice.

Johnsson is not only healthy after missing time with a lower-body injury to end 2022-23, but he's getting a significant look to start camp. It may be a temporary gig with Jake Guentzel (ankle) still recovering from surgery, but it's encouraging to see Johnsson working at right wing with prominent forwards. If he can win that job in training camp, he may have some deep-league appeal in fantasy.
