Nystrom has been assigned to AHL Chicago, the team announced Sunday.
Despite just signing a four-year extension, it's Nystrom who is the roster casualty for the Hurricanes with the return of Jaccob Slavin (lower body) from injured reserve. It makes sense given the 23-year-old doesn't require waivers to be moved down to the AHL. He departs the NHL roster with five assists and a plus-3 rating in 24 games played, but he will likely be the first call-up should another injury strike the Carolina defense corps.

Hurricanes' Joel Nystrom: Pockets first helper
Rotowire
Nystrom logged an assist and four shots on goal in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Sabres.
The helper was Nystrom's first in eight games to begin his NHL career. He's added 14 shots on net, seven blocked shots and an even plus-minus rating. The seventh-round pick from 2021 has looked decent in a bottom-four role so far. He'll compete with Charles-Alexis Legault to stick around on the roster while the Hurricanes wait for some injured blueliners to get healthy.
