Barkey is far from being a consistent scoring weapon despite his top-six role, but that isn't surprising for a 20-year-old rookie. He has done a good job of late, posting five points (one goal, four helpers) over his last five contests. Since making his NHL debut against the Rangers on Dec. 20 with a two-assist effort, the 2023 third-round pick has racked up eight points in 16 appearances with the Flyers.

Flyers' Denver Barkey: Garners two helpers in loss
Barkey notched two assists, three shots on goal and a plus-2 rating in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Penguins.
Barkey was scratched in Buffalo on Wednesday, and he responded well when he checked back into the lineup. His line with Sean Couturier and Matvei Michkov was arguably the Flyers' best unit in a game where no one looked all that good. Barkey has a goal, four assists, 14 shots on net, 10 hits and a minus-1 rating over 12 appearances. He'll need to continue to prove himself to avoid a demotion to AHL Lehigh Valley, but Barkey's competitive, two-way game bodes well for his long-term future in the NHL.

Barkey's tally at 7:16 of the first period was his first NHL goal. He's added two assists, nine shots on net, seven hits, seven blocked shots and a plus-1 rating over seven appearances since getting his first call-up from AHL Lehigh Valley on Dec. 19. Barkey's been put in a position to succeed on the second line, and he's also getting power-play time. Barkey put up two assists in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Rangers on Saturday.
Barkey impressed everyone Saturday in his NHL debut, especially head coach Rick Tocchet. "The way he played, the way he competes, yeah, I'm going to fight for him," Tocchet told reporters after the game. Barkey has 16 points in 26 games as an AHL rookie this season after being an important part of the OHL's London Knights' Memorial Cup win last season.

It's not out of place for a player to struggle when stepping up to a new level, and Barkey is an AHL rookie this year.
