Legault (hand) was activated from injured reserve and assigned to AHL Chicago on Monday.
Legault made his NHL debut early this season but sustained a hand injury in November that required surgery to repair several torn extensor tendons. However, he's been cleared to return to game action in the minors just before the NHL's Olympic break. Legault has made 65 regular-season appearances in the AHL across the past two seasons, recording three goals, 11 assists, 58 PIM and a plus-11 rating.

Hurricanes' Charles-Alexis Legault: Admitted to hospital Sunday
Rotowire
Legault (hand) went to the hospital to receive treatment after being cut by a skate during Sunday's 5-4 win in Toronto, per Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes' official site
According to Chip Alexander of The Raleigh News & Observer, head coach Rod Brind'Amour said postgame that Legault's laceration doesn't look good, so the 2023 fifth-round selection might be set to miss a significant amount of time. The 22-year-old will travel with the team back to Raleigh and be re-evaluated Monday. Carolina's blue line is extremely banged up -- Legault is now one of four defensemen dealing with an injury. It wouldn't be surprising to see Domenick Fensore, who has bounced between the AHL and NHL a few times this season, recalled from the minors in the near future as a result of Legault's injury.

Hurricanes' Charles-Alexis Legault: Cut by skate, won't return to game
Rotowire
Legault (hand) has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's contest in Toronto.
Legault's hand was cut by a skate during the first period. The defenseman registered two PIM and one hit in 7:15 of ice time prior to exiting the game. The Hurricanes are already dealing with multiple injuries on the blue line, so if Legault is forced to miss any additional time, which seems likely given the nature of his injury, Gavin Bayreuther, who was recalled from AHL Chicago on Saturday, would presumably be pressed into the lineup.

Hurricanes' Charles-Alexis Legault: Earns first two points Saturday
Rotowire
Legault scored an empty-net goal on two shots, dished an assist, added two PIM, logged two hits, blocked two shots and went plus-2 in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Sabres.
Legault helped out on an Eric Robinson tally in the third period before adding the second empty-netter himself to check off multiple firsts in his NHL career. The 22-year-old Legault has played a larger role than expected in 2025-26 due to numerous injuries on the Hurricanes' blue line. In addition to his two points, he's collected 10 shots, eight hits, six blocks, eight PIM and a plus-4 rating over seven appearances. He'll likely stay with the big club until at least one of Jaccob Slavin (lower body), Shayne Gostisbehere (abdomen) or Jalen Chatfield (upper body) can return.
Legault was promoted from AHL Chicago on Wednesday.
Legault will rejoin the Hurricanes just a few days after getting sent down. He will supplement the team's depth after Shayne Gostisbehere (lower body) sustained a new injury in Tuesday's contest against the Golden Knights.

Hurricanes' Charles-Alexis Legault: Placed back in minors
Rotowire
Legault was returned to AHL Chicago by the Hurricanes on Sunday, according to the official AHL website.
Legault has appeared in each of the Hurricanes' last three games, albeit in a sheltered role. The 22-year-old doesn't have a point but does have a plus-1 rating while averaging just 11:53 of ice time. His move to the AHL likely means some good news is on the way for one or more of Carolina's NHL defensemen that is currently out with injury, a list that presently includes K'Andre Miller, Jaccob Slavin and Shayne Gostisbehere.
