Cody Franson: Signs two-year pact with Russian club
Franson signed a two-year contract with Avangard Omsk of the KHL on Wednesday, Igor Eronko of Sport-Express reports.
Avangard's challengers should expect additional bumps and bruises the next two seasons, as physicality and grit have been the staple of Franson's game. He amassed 987 hits to go along with his 212 points (43 goals, 169 assists) over 550 career NHL contests split between the Maple Leafs, Predators, Sabres and Blackhawks, respectively.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Placed on waivers
Franson landed on the waiver wire Monday, Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports.
Franson is averaging a mere 14:03 of ice time in his four games back from injury and was a healthy scratch versus the Oilers on Sunday. The blueliner was getting looks on the power play during this stretch, which makes the move to waive him a little surprising. If he clears -- which is by no means guaranteed -- the 30-year-old figures to be reassigned to the minors. He last played in the AHL during the 2009-10 campaign, although he could decide to ask for his outright release rather than reporting to Rockford.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Activated from IR
The Blackhawks activated Franson (upper body) from injured reserve Friday.
Franson was cleared to play on Dec. 20, but he's remained on IR up until now because Chicago simply hasn't needed him with Jordan Oesterle stepping up and playing well on the right side in his absence. However, the Blackhawks placed Artem Anisimov (upper body) on IR on Friday, which opened up a spot on their roster for the 2005 third-round pick. Franson's next opportunity to crack Chicago's lineup will come Friday against the Oilers.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Out for precautionary reasons
Franson (upper body) will not be in Thursday's lineup against the Stars despite being cleared for action, Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
With Jordan Oesterle excelling on the Hawks' blue line in Franson's absence, head coach Joel Quenneville decided to give the veteran some additional time to get back to speed before returning to game action. Now healthy, Franson will become another member of Chicago's defensive stable that's competing for minutes again. Both Franson and Oesterle are capable of playing on the right side and contributing on the power play, so they'll likely be in direct competition with one another for a spot in the lineup.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Could return Thursday
Franson (upper body) is close to returning, and may be back in the lineup Thursday against the Stars, Tracey Myers of NHL.com reports.
Franson was putting up a somewhat surprising performance before his injury, notching seven points and 43 shots on net in 19 games. The veteran defenseman has missed four games with this injury.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Remains sidelined
Franson (upper body) wasn't on the ice for Saturday's practice, which indicates he won't be available for Sunday's matchup with the Wild, NHL.com's Tracey Myers reports.
The 30-year-old blueliner will almost certainly miss a fourth consecutive game Sunday due to the upper-body injury he suffered Dec. 8 against the Sabres. Jordan Oesterle has played well in Franson's absence, so the veteran defender could be the odd man out once he's cleared to play.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Transferred to injured reserve
Franson (upper body) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday.
The journeyman, who's belonged to four different clubs since the Predators originally selected him in the third round of the 2005 draft, will at least miss Thursday's game against the Jets in Winnipeg due to his IR status. In a corresponding move, the Blackhawks recalled Ville Pokka from AHL Rockford.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Out again Tuesday
As expected, Franson (upper body) will miss a second consecutive game Tuesday against the Panthers, NHL.com's Charlie Roumeliotis reports.
The severity of Franson's ailment remains unclear, but the veteran blueliner should be considered questionable at best for Thursday's matchup with the Jets at this juncture. Jordan Oesterle will continue to occupy Franson's spot in the lineup until he's given the green light to return.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Unlikely to play Tuesday
Franson (upper body) is doubtful for Tuesday's home game against the Panthers, Eric Lear of the Blackhawks' official site reports.
This news came from Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville, who added, "He looked like he was in some pain out there," presumably referring to Friday's game against the Sabres, when Franson sustained the ailment and was limited to a season-low 8:48 of ice time. Consider the veteran day-to-day until further notice.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Out Sunday
Franson (upper body) will miss Sunday's home tilt against Arizona, Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Franson likely suffered the injury Friday against Buffalo, when he saw less than nine minutes of ice time. After having initially struggled to crack the Chicago lineup, Franson has earned the trust of head coach Joel Quenneville, who's been deploying Franson on the top pairing lately. With Franson unavailable, Jordan Oesterle will suit up against the Coyotes.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Dealing with upper-body ailment
Franson is considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury, NHL.com's Tracey Myers reports.
The specific nature of Franson's upper-body ailment has yet to be determined, but the veteran blueliner should be considered questionable at best for Sunday's matchup with the Coyotes at this juncture. If Franson's unable to go, Jordan Oesterle will likely draw into the lineup against Arizona.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Fires six shots in loss to Preds
Franson registered six shots and received a minor penalty through 18:46 of ice time (2:34 with the man advantage) during Tuesday's 3-2 loss to Nashville.
The veteran has suited up for 11 of 12 games in November and posted four helpers and 29 shots while averaging 18:42 of ice time with 2:59 with the man advantage. Those numbers limit Franson's fantasy appeal to deep settings, but the power-play time and high shot volume are both encouraging. Still, expectations should remain in check.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Making case for regular spot in lineup
Coach Joel Quenneville is "very pleased" with Franson, who should start playing more going forward, Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Franson has frequently been a healthy scratch this season, but he's played extremely well when he's been inserted into the lineup, notching three assists while posting a plus-3 rating in four games. The 30-year-old blueliner is currently skating with Duncan Keith on the Blackhawks' top pairing, making him worth a look in deeper fantasy leagues.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Signs one-year contract
Franson agreed to terms on a one-year deal with Chicago on Wednesday.
Franson earned his way into this contract while on a professional tryout agreement during training camp. The towering blueliner logged 68 games for the Sabres last season in which he averaged 18:29 of ice time and compiled three goals, 16 assists and 87 hits. The 30-year-old will likely have to stave off Michal Rozsival (concussion) for ice time throughout the season, but should at least factor into coach Joel Quenneville's game-day roster decisions.

Blackhawks' Cody Franson: Inks PTO with Chicago
Franson will join the Blackhawks for training camp on a professional tryout agreement, Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Franson could be a great veteran addition to a Chicago blue-line corps that is extremely green heading into the 2017-18 campaign, but he won't be a viable fantasy option even if he's able to land a deal with the Blackhawks. The 30-year-old rearguard has failed to crack the 20-point mark in each of the last two seasons, so he doesn't present the offensive upside necessary to be a desirable fantasy asset at this stage in his career.

Sabres' Cody Franson: Not protected in Vegas draft
Franson has been exposed to the Vegas expansion draft, theScore reports.
The soon-to-be 30-year-old has failed to turn many heads in his first two seasons in Buffalo, posting totals of 17 and 19 points. Franson does, however, have four seasons of between 29 and 36 points under his belt (Nashville and Toronto), so it's conceivable that he could get back to the 30-plus point plateau -- which is no small feat for a defenseman -- in the right situation. It's also worth noting that he'll be an unrestricted free agent come July, so if Vegas wishes to select him in the expansion draft on June 21, it'll get three days of exclusive negotiating rights to try to bang out a deal before his UFA status kicks in.

Sabres' Cody Franson: Will play Monday
Franson (upper body) will rejoin the lineup Monday against the Maple Leafs, Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports.
Franson has finally returned to full health after missing each of the last six contests due to the upper-body issue. The blueliner does present some appeal in daily formats, but doesn't produce enough to be worthy of ownership in the vast majority of season-long formats. He should slot back into the pairings Monday, though it's unclear who will come out in his place at this point.

Sabres' Cody Franson: Ruled out Sunday
Franson (upper body) will not dress for Sunday's game against the Islanders.
Franson returned to practice Thursday, but will miss at least one more contest due to the upper-body issue. The blueliner provides a bit of offense for the club (19 points in 65 games), but not enough to be worthy of fantasy ownership in the vast majority of leagues. His next chance to rejoin the action comes Monday, but the team should update his status again when he's healthy and ready to play.
