WASHINGTON (AP) Jalen Smith led a balanced attack with 20 points and New Hampshire turned back American 80-70 on Tuesday night.
Iba Camara added 16 points, Jordan Reed 12, Daniel Dion 11 and Tanner Leissner 10 for the Wildcats (6-3).
New Hampshire made 12 of 17 3-pointers - the same as its free throw totals - and shot 56 percent from the field (28 of 50). Smith and Reed both had four from long distance. It was a career-high for Reed on four attempts, all in the second half.
Leading 34-33 at the half, New Hampshire had a 14-2 run to take a 65-51 lead with 7:21 to play. Smith started and ended the surge with 3-pointers. The Eagles (1-7) were within nine points late but Smith made two free throws, Dion made 3 of 4 and David Watkins had two to protect the lead.
Saeed Nelson had 21 points for American.
