Brown's triple double leads Miami to 82-46 win over SC St.
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) Bruce Brown already is enjoying memorable performances nine games into his collegiate career.
Days after being named ACC Freshman of the Week, Brown finished with a triple-double to lead Miami to an 82-46 win over South Carolina State Tuesday night. The triple double was Miami's first since 2004.
Brown scored 11 points and finished with 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the Hurricanes. The performance capped an emotional day for the guard, whose uncle, Edward Dillard, died earlier Tuesday.
''The game was for him,'' Brown said. ''I played every possession like if it was my last.''
Brown had nine rebounds in the first half and reached double figures 7:42 into the second half. But Brown didn't reach double digit scoring until his dunk with 4:34 remaining. His final assist resulted in D.J. Vasiljevic's 3-pointer with 2:59 left that gave Miami its largest lead at 81-42.
Midway through the second half, Brown pleaded for additional playing time with Miami coach Jim Larranaga in his attempts to reach the coveted mark.
Miami's last triple-double came when Anthony King scored 11 points, had 10 rebounds and blocked 13 shots against Florida Atlantic on November 29, 2004.
''I went to coach L, please don't take me out until I get three more assists and one more point,'' Brown said.
''I think the greatest thing about Bruce is his personality, his enthusiasm, his smile and energy that he brings to practice every day and he brings to the court every game,'' Larranaga said. ''He's such a hard worker.''
The Hurricanes (7-2) opened the game with an 18-0 run in the first 6:15. Davon Reed and Ja'Quan Newton scored four points each during Miami's early surge.
The Bulldogs (2-6) missed their first 10 shots until Tashombe Riley's jumper broke the scoring drought with 13:27 remaining in the first half.
''It speaks to the level of their athleticism and guys finishing plays,'' Bulldogs coach Murray Garvin. ''I don't think we gave a lot of resistance.''
Vasiljevic scored a team-high 17 points for the Hurricanes. All of the Vasiljevic's field goals were 3-pointers as he shot 5-of-11 from behind the arc.
Reed and Newtwon were Miami's other double figure scorers with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Reed shots 6-of-8 from the field.
Anthony Lawrence's 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the Hurricanes a 42-14 lead at halftime.
Eric Eaves scored 14 points to lead the Bulldogs.
BIG PICTURE:
MIAMI: South Carolina State's 14 first half points were the fewest allowed in a half by the Hurricanes since they also limited Maryland to 14 on Jan. 13, 2013.
SOUTH CAROLINA STATE: the Bulldogs reached double figures with 4:15 remaining in the first half when Riley's jumper reduced Miami's lead to 36-11.
QUOTABLE: ''You can't beat the YMCA Bullfrogs if you give them an 18-point start,'' Garvin said of Miami's early scoring blitz. ''Against an ACC opponent you definitely will have a hard time climbing back into the game with the start that we had.''
INTERIOR PRESENCE: the Hurricanes' first half dominance featured a 22-2 advantage in points inside the paint. Miami also out-rebounded South Carolina State 25-11 in the first half.
UP NEXT:
MIAMI: the Hurricanes will host Florida Atlantic on Dec. 16. Fall semester final exams at the university resulted in the 10-day gap between games.
SOUTH CAROLINA: the Bulldogs continue their road tilted early season schedule when they visit Texas A&M Saturday night. Of South Carolina's first 16 games, 14 are on the road.
