Steelers' Jaylen Warren: Records 73 total yards, fumble in win
Warren rushed 10 times for 46 yards and brought in five of six targets for 27 yards in the Steelers' 20-13 win over the Falcons on Sunday. He also lost a fumble.
Sunday offered the first look at the division of labor between Warren and new backfield mate Rico Dowdle, and by game's end, the former had outpaced the latter by two carries and one target. Warren was by far the more efficient of the two while averaging 4.6 yards per carry to Dowdle's 1.9, and he also was the more effective receiver. Warren's lost fumble was the one blemish on his day, as it was recovered at the Steelers' 25-yard line and led to the Falcons' sole touchdown. Warren should have a solid chance of remaining the narrow leader of the ground attack in a Week 2 road showdown against the Patriots next Sunday.

Steelers' Jaylen Warren: To share backfield with Dowdle
Warren and Rico Dowdle are expected to have regular roles in the Steelers offense during the 2026 season, Dan Graziano of ESPN.com reports.
With Kenny Gainwell moving on to the Buccaneers in free agency, Warren is the top incumbent running back in Pittsburgh, but Dowdle has taken Gainwell's place. Dowdle's previous experience with new coach Mike McCarthy in Dallas could dampen Warren's early-down role somewhat, but according to Graziano, Warren should take on the bulk of the pass-catching work out of Pittsburgh's backfield, as evidenced by his 139 catches in 48 regular-season games over the last three campaigns. Overall, Warren handled a career-high 251 touches in 2025, while Dowdle is coming off back-to-back seasons with 274 (with the Cowboys) and 275 (in Carolina), so both should be busy on a weekly basis this fall.

Warren rushed five times for 17 yards in Friday's 17-0 preseason loss to the Jets.
Warren was the first running back into the game for the Steelers but split carries with Rico Dowdle throughout the first half. The two running backs had similar stat lines, as Dowdle rushed five times for 18 yards and added a two-yard catch. Pittsburgh's entire offense struggled with Will Howard and Drew Allar at QB, but things should improve in the regular season with Aaron Rodgers under center. Warren and Dowdle appear poised for a near-even split barring injury or the emergence of a hot hand.

Steelers' Jaylen Warren: Suited up Friday
Warren is in uniform for Friday's preseason game against the Jets, Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
After sitting out Pittsburgh's exhibition win over Green Bay last Thursday, both Warren and new backfield mate Rico Dowdle are suited up and appear set to get some valuable reps ahead of Week 1. Both Warren and Rico Dowdle observed Thursday's game from the sidelines while depth backfield options Lew Nichols and Eli Heidenreich combined for 19 of the Steelers' 28 carries. Warren is listed ahead of Dowdle on the Steelers' first unofficial depth chart that was released Aug. 5, but the duo could see similar workloads in a balanced backfield, per Brian Batko of the team's official site.

Warren is listed ahead of free-agent addition Rico Dowdle on the Steelers' initial depth chart ahead of the preseason, Brian Batko of the team's official site reports.
As the incumbent starter, it's not surprising to see Warren's name atop the team's first posted depth chart, but Batko notes that coach Mike McCarthy is looking for a balanced backfield approach with a 1-2 punch, and Dowdle will no doubt see his share of touches in tandem with Warren. Also in the mix for depth slotting behind the top duo are Kaleb Johnson, Lew Nichols, Travis Homer and rookie Eli Heidenreich, but from a fantasy perspective, Warren and Dowdle, while working in what could turn into a 1A/1B situation are the names to know in the team's backfield ahead of Week 1.

Warren worked ahead of Dowdle on Wednesday but was the second running back up Thursday.
