Foltynewicz elected free agency after clearing outright waivers Saturday. Foltynewicz made 28 appearances (24 starts) during his first season with the Rangers and posted a 5.44 ERA and 1.26 WHIP in 139 innings. However, the 30-year-old will now be free to seek out other opportunities heading into the offseason.

Foltynewicz worked out of the bullpen Sunday in his first game back from the COVID-19 injured list, tossing three innings while yielding two runs on two hits and two walks in the Rangers' 7-2 loss to the White Sox. Texas cleared room for him on the 40-man roster and 28-man active roster by designating starting pitcher Kohei Arihara for assignment, but Foltynewicz doesn't look like he'll end up replacing Arihara in the rotation. Instead, Dane Dunning will be added to the Rangers' six-man rotation Tuesday in New York, likely leaving Foltynewicz to settle for low-leverage mop-up work out of the bullpen over the final two weeks of the season. Even after missing about a month of action while he was on the COVID-19 IL, Foltynewicz has still allowed the third-most home runs (34) of any pitcher in 2021, trailing only teammate Jordan Lyles (37) and Nationals lefty Patrick Corbin (36).

Foltynewicz (undisclosed) was activated from the COVID-19 injured list Sunday. Foltynewicz has been on the COVID IL since Aug. 23, but he resumed workouts last week and is now back on the active roster. The team hasn't announced the right-hander's role for the final two weeks of the season, but he could fill the vacant spot in the rotation left by Kohei Arihara, who was designated for assignment Sunday in a corresponding move.

Foltynewicz (undisclosed) has returned to the Rangers but is still on the COVID-19 injured list as of Friday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. The right-hander began workouts at the Rangers' spring training facility after clearing COVID protocols last week, and now he's rejoined the Rangers. It's still not entirely clear when Foltynewicz is expected to be added back to the major-league roster, nor whether he'll finish the season as a starter or reliever.

Foltynewicz (COVID-19 injured list) was cleared Monday to resume working out at the Rangers' spring training facility in Arizona, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. Foltynewicz is in the process of building up again after completing a quarantine period following his placement on the COVID-19 IL on Aug. 23. The Rangers aren't setting a target date for Foltynewicz's return, but even once he makes it back from the IL, he may not be guaranteed a rotation spot. The 29-year-old is playing on an expiring contract and has submitted a 5.54 ERA over 130 innings while serving up 34 home runs -- tied for the second-most in the majors -- so he wouldn't seem to factor into the rebuilding Rangers' plans heading into 2022.
