  Springer went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Monday's loss to the Rays. It was the veteran slugger's seventh steal of the season, and his first since June 17. Springer missed a big chunk of the early July schedule while on the paternity and family leave lists, but he's hit safely in eight of his last nine games dating back to June 28, batting .278 (10-for-36) over that stretch with a triple, two homers, four RBI and six runs.

Springer started the first two games coming out of the All-Star break and will hit the bench Sunday after going 2-for-8 with a homer and three RBI.   Springer went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional RBI during the Blue Jays' 12-4 loss to the White Sox on Friday. Springer got the Blue Jays on the board in the third inning on a fielder's choice before taking Trevor Richards deep to left field in the fifth. It was the 10th home run of the season for Springer, who played defense for the first time this season with a start in left field. That could open more opportunities at DH for catchers Alejandro Kirk and Brandon Valenzuela, or even rookie Sean Keys, as Toronto searches for a spark on offense.

  Springer is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Springer started the past three games after missing six contests while on the paternity and family medical emergency list, but he'll take a seat Sunday for the final matchup before the All-Star break. Barring an appearance off the bench, the veteran slugger will finish the first half with a disappointing .218/.303/.374 slash line, nine home runs and six steals in 66 games.

Back in the lineup for the first time since June 30, Springer went back-to-back with Vladimir Guerrero in the ninth inning off Ryan Walker to put an exclamation point on the Blue Jays' offensive outburst. Springer picked up right where he left off prior to being away from the team due to the birth of his child -- over his last 14 games in June, he slashed .281/.333/.439 with two homers, three steals, five RBI and eight runs.
