Manager Mark Kotsay said Thursday that Wood (shoulder) is scheduled undergo season-ending surgery, Brent Maguire of MLB.com reports. Wood has been sidelined since mid-May with left rotator cuff tendinitis. After treating the injury with rest and rehab and receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection, Wood didn't bounce back as well as the Athletics and hoped and wasn't able to resume throwing before he opted for surgery. Wood didn't disclose the nature of Wood's surgery, but regardless of the procedure, the veteran southpaw could face an uphill battle to gain clearance for spring training. The 33-year-old -- who joined Oakland on a one-year deal in January -- will finish his 2024 campaign with a 1-3 record, 5.26 ERA and 1.78 WHIP over 39.1 innings.

Wood (shoulder) hasn't resumed a throwing program since receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection during the second week of June, MLB.com reports. Wood will be eligible to come off the 60-day injured list next week, but since he's not yet even playing catch again since being shut down in mid-May with left rotator cuff tendinitis, he could be more than a month away from rejoining the Oakland rotation. Prior to landing on the shelf, Wood went 1-3 with a 5.26 ERA and 1.78 WHIP across 39.1 innings over his nine starts.

Oakland transferred Wood (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday. Wood landed on the 15-day IL in May 13 with left rotator cuff tendinitis. He had progressed in his rehab to the point of playing catch, but the 33-year-old southpaw still won't be on track to complete his throwing program until at least mid-July. Prior to the injury, Wood started in nine games, posting a 1-3 record with a 5.26 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 33:19 K:BB over 39.1 innings.

Wood (shoulder) is slated to begin playing catch this weekend, MLB.com reports. The veteran southpaw hit the injured list May 15 with what was diagnosed as a rotator cuff strain, and he's been shut down from throwing since. The rest appears to be doing Wood some good if this latest news is any indication, and a decision on whether he'll eventually require a rehab assignment will likely be informed by how he progresses through his throwing program.

The Athletics placed Wood (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with left rotator cuff tendinitis. The transaction is retroactive to Monday, so Wood will be eligible to come off the IL as soon as May 28. Given Wood's long track record of injuries and history as a slow healer, however, fantasy managers who have been rostering the veteran southpaw should probably prepare for him to miss more than the minimum 15 days. Wood's shoulder issue had been bothering him during his most recent start this past Sunday in Seattle, prompting the Athletics to pull him after just two innings while his fastball velocity was down about two ticks from his season-long average. The Athletics haven't named an immediate replacement in the rotation for Wood, but Kyle Muller tossed four innings in relief of the lefty last Sunday and could be stretched out enough to step into the vacant starting role this weekend in Kansas City.
