Holmes declined his $12 million player option for 2027 on Thursday and is now a free agent, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. The Cubs will have an exclusive negotiating window with Holmes for a few days, and they are reportedly interested in re-signing the righty. However, Holmes is almost surely going to reach free agency and field bids from several clubs. The 33-year-old was limited to 18 regular-season starts due to a fractured fibula, but he posted a 3.29 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 78:42 K:BB over 101.1 innings.

Holmes didn't factor into the decision in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Red Sox, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out three. The right-hander took a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning before stumbling and getting lifted after 78 pitches (50 strikes). Holmes wasn't able to repeat his early-season success for the Mets following a trade to the Cubs, and over nine starts for his new team he produced a 4.25 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 33:24 K:BB in 48.2 innings. Whether he has a spot in Chicago's wild-card round rotation could depend on the health of Kevin Gausman (shoulder).

Holmes (6-8) took the loss Friday, coughing up six runs on three hits and five walks over 5.1 innings as the Cubs fell 6-4 to the Reds. He struck out four. The veteran righty threw 57 of 97 pitches for strikes en route to a new season high in free passes. Holmes hasn't been able to replicate his early-season success with the Mets since being acquired by Chicago, and over eight starts for his new team he's gone 2-4 with a 4.26 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 30:21 K:BB in 44.1 innings. He'll get one more chance to build some momentum ahead of the playoffs, with Holmes' final start of the regular season lined up to come at home next week against the Marlins.

Holmes (6-7) took the loss against the Marlins on Sunday, allowing eight runs on six hits and three walks in 4.1 innings. He struck out two. It was perhaps a season-worst outing by Holmes, who surrendered a season-high eight runs Sunday. The right-hander has given up one run or zero in four of his six starts for the Cubs, but he's tallied two strikeouts or fewer three times since coming over from the Mets. He'll carry a 3.51 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 20:12 K:BB over 33.1 innings for Chicago into his next scheduled appearance versus Pittsburgh.

Holmes (6-6) earned the win Monday, allowing five hits and two walks over six scoreless innings against the Brewers. He struck out eight. Provided with ample run support, Holmes was locked in on the mound, putting together a scoreless outing for the second straight start. Since joining the Cubs at the trade deadline, the right-hander has posted a 1.55 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 18:9 K:BB across 29 innings (five starts). Overall, he owns a 2.09 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 63:27 K:BB over 81.2 innings (14 starts) and is tentatively scheduled to pitch Saturday against the Marlins.
